San Francisco Bay Area Fishing Guide — Halibut, Striped Bass, Salmon & Rockfish
The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most diverse saltwater fisheries on the West Coast — from California halibut and striped bass in the Bay itself, to ocean salmon out the Golden Gate, to rockfish and lingcod at the Farallon Islands, to sturgeon and largemouth bass in the Delta. The fishery spans estuarine, ocean, and inland systems within a 60-mile radius.
Why the Bay Area?
San Francisco Bay and the connected Delta form one of the largest estuarine systems on the U.S. West Coast — over 1,600 square miles of water. The Bay holds California halibut and a sustained striped bass fishery (a unique West Coast population). The Golden Gate is the gateway to ocean salmon, rockfish, lingcod, and seasonal albacore. The Delta is its own world — sturgeon, striper, and freshwater bass fishery extending east to Sacramento.
Top Target Species
California Halibut
The Bay’s signature inshore species. Halibut hold on sandy bottom in 25-80 feet — the Berkeley flats, South Bay, San Pablo Bay. Live anchovies on Carolina rigs slow-trolled along bottom; soft plastic swimbaits hopped along the bottom.
Striped Bass
Bay-Delta stripers — a unique West Coast population stemming from East Coast transplants in the 1800s. Spring spawn in the Delta and Sacramento River; fall fishery in the Bay and Carquinez Strait. Trolled lures, live bait, and surface plugs.
Salmon — When Open
Ocean salmon (Chinook) from May through October when seasons are open (CDFW closures in recent years have been frequent — verify current rules). Mooching with anchovies, trolled spoons, and downrigger fishing off the Golden Gate, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay.
Rockfish & Lingcod
The Farallon Islands, Pacifica reef, Half Moon Bay, and Cordell Bank produce excellent rockfish (black, blue, vermilion, copper) and trophy lingcod. Strict CDFW depth-zone seasons — verify each year.
Sturgeon
White sturgeon in San Pablo Bay, Suisun Bay, and the Delta — primarily catch-and-release with specific slot retention. Big fish (4-6 ft) routine; trophy fish over 7 ft possible.
Leopard Shark — South Bay
A unique California fishery — leopard sharks (3-5 ft) on the South Bay shallow flats. Squid or sardine chunks on Carolina rigs. Light line, catch-and-release encouraged.
Pacific Herring Run
Winter (January-March) herring spawning run in SF Bay — massive bait fishery plus excellent eating fresh.
Surf Striper
Pacifica and Ocean Beach in summer/fall — Pacific surf striped bass on bait or plugs.
Best Fishing Spots
Berkeley Flats
Central Bay east — the premier California halibut spot. Sandy bottom in 25-80 ft, trolled live bait or drift fishing.
The Golden Gate
The opening from the Bay to the Pacific — ocean salmon when seasons allow; striper in fall; halibut on the sand patches.
Pacifica & Half Moon Bay
30-40 minutes south of SF — ocean rockfish, lingcod, salmon (when open), and surf striper. Pillar Point Harbor is the main port.
The Farallon Islands
30 miles offshore — premium rockfish and lingcod. Day trips out of Berkeley and Emeryville on the party-boat fleet.
Carquinez Strait
The choke point between San Pablo Bay and Suisun — striper rips on outgoing tide, sturgeon on the deeper holes.
The Delta
East of Suisun Bay — striper, sturgeon, largemouth bass, catfish, salmon (when open). Thousands of miles of waterway between Stockton and Sacramento.
When to Fish — Seasonal Breakdown
January–February: Pacific herring spawn in Bay; sturgeon in San Pablo Bay; rockfish offshore (deep zones open).
March–April: Striped bass spawning in Delta (catch-and-release in spawning closures); sturgeon strong.

July–August: Peak summer — halibut, salmon (when open), albacore offshore in some years.
September–October: Fall striper in Bay; salmon finishing; rockfish strong.
November–December: Striper in Bay; sturgeon ramping up; rockfish (verify CDFW zone closures); Dungeness crab opener.

California saltwater regulations apply — verify current CDFW rules. Halibut 22″ minimum, 5 per day. Striped bass 18″ minimum, 2 per day. Salmon and rockfish seasons highly variable by depth zone and year. Sturgeon slot retention 40-60″ (only specific zones, verify). California sport fishing license + ocean enhancement validation required.
