A knot failure at the worst possible moment — the biggest fish of the season already running — is almost always avoidable. Every knot you tie reduces the line’s rated breaking strength to some degree. The job is to pick connections that retain the highest percentage of that strength while still being fast enough to tie on a rolling deck, in the dark, with cold hands. These are the fifteen knots worth knowing, what each one is actually for, and how to tie it.

Why knot strength matters

A line’s rated breaking strength is measured in a straight pull with no knot in it. Introduce a knot and that number drops. A badly tied knot can cost 30 to 50 percent of the line’s strength; a well-tied one retains 90 percent or better. The difference is almost never the knot itself — it is technique. Two habits account for most of it: wetting the knot before you cinch it, because monofilament and fluorocarbon generate friction heat that permanently weakens the line when tightened dry, and seating the knot fully and evenly before you trim the tag.

Two more points worth internalizing. First, knot strength percentages published anywhere — including in the table below — are approximate and depend heavily on line brand, diameter, and the person tying. Treat them as relative rankings, not specifications. Second, a knot that you can tie reliably at night in a chop is worth more than a theoretically stronger knot you fumble. Learn a small set well.

Terminal knots: hook, lure, or swivel

1. Palomar knot

Best for: Braid to hooks, lures, and swivels. Roughly 95–100% strength. The fastest strong knot there is.

  1. Double about six inches of line and pass the doubled loop through the hook eye.
  2. Tie a loose overhand knot in the doubled line. The hook hangs from the bottom of the loop.
  3. Pass the hook through the large loop you just formed.
  4. Wet the knot thoroughly.
  5. Pull the tag end and standing line together, guiding the knot down to seat against the eye.
  6. Trim the tag to about an eighth of an inch.

Why it leads the list: the line passes through the eye doubled, the knot is compact enough to run through guides cleanly, and it is close to impossible to tie wrong. On braid it is the default.

2. Improved clinch knot

Best for: Monofilament and fluorocarbon to hooks and lures. Roughly 85–95% strength.

  2. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to seven times — more wraps on lighter line, five on 20 lb and heavier.

  1. Pass six inches through the eye and fold it back parallel to the standing line, forming a small loop.
  2. Wrap the tag around the doubled line and through the loop four to six times.
  3. Wet and pull the tag to snug the wraps into a coil.
  4. Slide the coil to the eye by pulling the standing line.
  5. Trim to an eighth of an inch.

Loop variation: stop before sliding the coil all the way down and you have a loop knot, which frees a lure to swing. Useful on jerkbaits and suspending twitch baits.

4. Non-slip mono loop

Best for: Maximum action on jerkbaits, swimbaits, poppers, and flies. Roughly 90–95% strength.

  1. Tie a loose overhand knot about ten inches from the tag end.
  2. Pass the tag through the hook eye, then back through the overhand knot, entering from the same side it exited.
  3. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to six times, working toward the hook.
  4. Pass the tag back through the overhand knot.
  5. Wet and tighten by pulling the standing line, then trim.

Size the loop deliberately. A quarter-inch loop is plenty; an oversized loop tangles and fouls the hook.

Line-to-line: leader connections

5. Double uni knot

Best for: Braid to a mono or fluoro leader. Roughly 85–90% strength. The most widely used inshore leader connection.

  1. Overlap the two lines by about six inches, running in opposite directions.
  2. With the braid, tie a uni around the leader with six to eight wraps.
  3. With the leader, tie a uni around the braid with four to five wraps.
  4. Wet both, then pull the standing lines apart until the two knots jam together.
  5. Trim both tags close.

The braid side needs more wraps than the mono side. That asymmetry is the whole trick.

6. Albright knot

Best for: Joining lines of very different diameters — light braid to a heavy shock leader. 90%-plus strength when seated properly.

  1. Make a loop in the heavier line and pinch it.
  2. Pass about ten inches of the lighter line through the loop.
  3. Wrap the lighter line back over both strands of the loop and over itself ten to twelve times, working toward the closed end.
  4. Pass the tag of the lighter line back through the loop, exiting the same side it entered.
  5. Wet and tighten carefully, sliding the wraps to the end of the loop.
  6. Trim both tags.

The Albright’s weakness is slippage when the wraps are not fully bedded. Add two or three half hitches over the leader tag to lock it, and pull-test before you fish it.

7. FG knot

Best for: Braid to fluorocarbon leader where maximum strength and a low profile matter. Roughly 95–100% strength, and the slimmest connection in common use.

The FG is not a knot in the usual sense — it weaves the braid around the leader in alternating half-hitches, so the connection tightens on itself under load rather than relying on a coil. That is why it is both the strongest and the thinnest option, and why it passes through guides better than any double uni.

Sequence: keep the leader under firm tension (a rod butt, a knee, or your teeth); alternately wrap the braid over and under the leader fifteen to twenty times, keeping every wrap tight against the last; lock the weave with three or four half hitches in the braid; finish with a double half hitch and trim. Practice it at home before you need it — it is a knot you learn with your hands, not from a paragraph.

8. Surgeon’s knot

Best for: Fast connections between similar-diameter lines, and fly leader to tippet. Roughly 90% strength. The quickest line-to-line knot to tie.

  1. Overlap the two lines by six inches.
  2. Tie an overhand knot with both lines together, pulling the entire short line through.
  3. Pass both ends through the loop a second time.
  4. Wet and pull all four ends at once to seat it evenly.
  5. Trim both tags.

A third pass makes a triple surgeon’s, which holds better on slick fluorocarbon at the cost of a bit more bulk.

Loops and doubled line

9. Perfection loop

Best for: A permanent loop at the end of a leader or fly line for loop-to-loop connections. Roughly 90% strength.

  1. Make a loop by crossing the tag behind the standing line.
  2. Make a second loop in front of the first by crossing the tag in front of the standing line.
  3. Pass the tag between the two loops, front to back.
  4. Pull the second loop through the first while holding the tag.
  5. Wet and tighten. A correctly tied perfection loop sits square to the standing line.

10. Spider hitch

Best for: Creating a doubled line section quickly, as a Bimini substitute. Roughly 85% strength.

  1. Double back about eighteen inches of line to form a long loop.
  2. Form a small reverse loop near the base and pinch it between thumb and forefinger, with the thumb extending past the loop.
  3. Wind the doubled line around the thumb and the small loop five times, working toward the thumb tip.
  4. Pass the end of the long loop through the small loop and slide the wraps off the thumb one at a time while pulling steadily.
  5. Wet and pull the doubled loop and the standing line to seat the wraps.

Far faster than a Bimini and adequate for most inshore and nearshore work; it does not match a Bimini for retained strength on heavy tackle.

11. Bimini twist

Best for: A near-100% doubled line for offshore leaders, wind-on connections, and IGFA class-tippet rigging.

The Bimini creates a doubled section without measurably weakening the line, which is why it remains the foundation of serious offshore rigging. It is tied by putting twenty wraps into a long loop under tension, then feeding those wraps back down over themselves and locking the result with half hitches. It takes two hands and usually a knee or a rod butt, and it takes practice. If you fish offshore leaders, learn it; if you fish inshore, the spider hitch will usually do.

12. Snell knot

Best for: Tying leader directly to a hook shank — particularly circle hooks and offset-eye hooks — so pull aligns with the shank. Roughly 95–100% strength.

  2. Loop the tag back toward the eye, forming a loop along the shank.

Trim both tags and coat the connection with flexible cement if you want it fully snag-free.

15. Homer Rhode loop knot

Best for: A fixed loop in heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon bite leader, for large flies and offshore lures where free swing matters more than knot strength.

Tie a loose overhand knot in the leader, pass the tag through the hook or lure eye, then back through the overhand knot. Tie a second overhand knot around the standing line with the tag, snug the first knot down against the eye to set your loop size, then pull the standing line to jam the two overhands together. Understand the trade: this is a low-percentage knot by strength, which is exactly why it is used in heavy bite leader where the leader is far stronger than the class tippet ahead of it.

Knot-tying habits that matter

  • Wet every knot before you tighten it. Friction heat in mono and fluoro is cumulative and permanent. A dry-cinched knot can give up 10 to 20 percent of its strength before it ever meets a fish.
  • Pull steadily, never in a jerk. Steady tension seats coils evenly; a snatch lets one coil cut across another.

  • Match the knot to the line. Palomar for braid. Improved clinch or uni for mono and fluoro. FG or double uni for braid to leader. Snell for circle hooks.
  • Retie on a schedule, not on a hunch. Check leaders after every good fish and after any contact with structure. Run the last two feet through your fingers — if you feel roughness, cut back and retie.
