The Texas coast is in prime summer wade-fishing form this week. Speckled trout have set up on the outside — the beachfront guts, passes, and deeper structure — and the early-morning wade for trout and reds is as good as it gets.

What’s Hitting

Speckled trout are the summer headline, holding on the beachfront guts, the passes, and the deeper grass and structure. Redfish are working the shorelines, back lakes, and the surf. Spanish mackerel and the odd tarpon have shown along the beaches, and black drum are on the passes.

Where to Find Them

Wade the beachfront guts and the deeper grass and shell for trout at first light. Reds hold on the shorelines, in the back lakes, and in the surf guts. The passes and jetties give up trout, drum, and the occasional tarpon on the moving tide.

Tides & Conditions

Water is warm in the mid-80s, so the dawn and dusk windows are the money. A light morning wind opens the surf and the outside wade before the sea breeze builds a chop. A moving tide through the passes and along the guts concentrates the trout and bait. Mullet, shrimp, and small baitfish are thick along the guts and the grass lines, and the summer trout and reds set up wherever that bait concentrates on the moving tide. On the flats, watch for slicks and nervous bait — the slick of feeding fish popped up over the grass is a dead giveaway to a working school.

Tackle & Tactics

For wade-fishing trout, throw a topwater at first light, then switch to a soft plastic on a jighead or a live croaker as the sun climbs. Reds eat a gold spoon, a soft plastic, or cut bait on the shorelines. Spanish and drum hit spoons and shrimp on the passes.

Local Intel This Week

The Bluewater and Packery Channel ramps serve the Corpus Christi area, with the Port O’Connor ramps covering the middle coast and the 61st Street ramp serving Galveston. Trout are concentrating on the beachfront guts and passes, reds on the shorelines and surf. Always check current FWC/state and federal regulations and open seasons before keeping any fish — bag and size limits change through the summer.

This Week’s Tip

Working topwater for trout at first light, slow your walk-the-dog cadence down as the water warms through the morning. Big summer trout often want a deliberate, pausing retrieve rather than a fast one — let the plug sit in the strike zone a beat longer and the better fish will commit.
