August Heat Strategy
Summer in Naples and Marco means brutal heat and dawn-only inshore fishing. Surface water temperatures push 86–88°F and the bite shuts down completely outside the early-morning and evening windows. On the water by 5:30 AM, off by 10:00 AM, back at 7:00 PM. Hydrate aggressively, wear UPF-rated lightweight clothing, and watch the afternoon thunderstorms — they build fast and produce dangerous lightning over the 10,000 Islands and open Gulf.
Snook Closed, Tarpon Still Around
Snook season is closed (catch-and-release only) June through August. The fish are around — dawn at the passes, dock lights at night — but harvest is off the table. Use heavy gear (40+ lb leader), handle gently, photograph in the water if possible. Tarpon are still in the system though the big migration is past peak. The 10,000 Islands channels and Coon Key Pass on outgoing tide still produce shots at fish at dawn. Live mullet or threadfin drifted on the falling water.
Redfish, Trout — First Light Only
Redfish are tailing on the dark-bottom flats at sunrise — sight-casting with gold spoons or weedless soft plastics. By 9 AM the bite shuts down. Spotted trout are stacked in deeper holes during the heat, moving onto shallow grass at first light. Topwater plugs in the first 45 minutes, then soft plastics on a 1/8 oz jighead. The grass flats of the 10,000 Islands and inside Rookery Bay are the productive water.
Offshore in Its Element
Federal red snapper season is open (verify current NOAA dates). The inshore reefs in 80–120 feet are stacked with fish. Gag grouper (when open), amberjack, and king mackerel on the deeper edges. Mahi-mahi peak on the offshore weedlines 20-30 miles out. The mid-shelf wrecks are loaded with big fish — make the run early before afternoon storms.
Conditions, Hotspots, Regs
Water temps 84–88°F inshore. Florida saltwater license required. Federal reef fish endorsement (free). Tarpon over 40 inches release-only. Snook closed. Red snapper varies — verify. Hotspots: Coon Key Pass dawn for tarpon, 10K Islands grass at sunrise for trout, inshore reefs at 80–120 ft for snapper. Best ramps: Caxambas Park, Goodland Boat Park. Stay safe out there. Tight lines.
Boat Ramps and Heat Strategy
Caxambas Park on Marco Island for fastest access to the 10,000 Islands and south Naples waters. Goodland Boat Park is an alternate. Cocohatchee Park ramp on the north end for the Cocohatchee River and inshore north of Naples. August requires a strict schedule — on the water by 5:30 AM, off by 10:00 AM, back at 7:00 PM for the evening bite. Hydrate, sunscreen, watch the afternoon thunderstorms (they’re dangerous over the open Gulf and the 10K Islands). A marine VHF radio is required for any offshore run. Tight lines and stay safe.
