Ocean City, Maryland — “The White Marlin Capital of the World” — hosts the world’s largest and richest billfish tournament every August while delivering a remarkably diverse year-round fishery. The inshore back bays produce excellent flounder and bluefish, the surf provides striped bass access from spring through fall, and the offshore canyons (Hudson, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Washington) are among the most productive canyon fisheries on the East Coast.
Top Species in Ocean City Waters
Surf/Bay: Striped bass (spring and fall), bluefish, flounder, weakfish, kingfish (whiting), and tautog on hard structure.
Nearshore/Offshore: White marlin (summer–fall at the canyons), bluefin tuna (spring and fall), yellowfin tuna (summer canyons), mahi-mahi (summer), wahoo (fall), and shark.
Top Fishing Spots
- Ocean City Inlet / The Jetties: The inlet produces excellent flounder drift fishing in summer, stripers and bluefish in fall, and tautog on the jetty rocks in spring and fall. The north jetty is walkable from the Northside Park area.
- Assateague Island surf: The national seashore south of OC provides excellent beach access for striped bass, bluefish, and red drum (small channel bass) in the fall. 4WD vehicle permit required.
- The White Marlin Open Grounds (Baltimore Canyon, Washington Canyon): The destination for the annual August tournament — white and blue marlin, tuna, mahi, and wahoo at 60–80 miles offshore.
- The Poor Man’s Canyon / The Jack Spot (30–40 miles): Intermediate offshore structure producing mahi, yellowfin tuna, and the first white marlin of the season earlier than the full canyon run.
- Fish N Paddle Kayak Zone (back bays): The OC back bays produce excellent kayak fishing for flounder, stripers, and bluefish accessible from multiple launch points.
