Summer Heat Strategy

August in Fort Myers and Sanibel is brutal. Inshore water temperatures are pushing 86–88°F surface, and the bite shuts down completely outside the first 90 minutes of light and the last hour of dusk. Plan accordingly: on the water by 5:30 AM, off by 10:00 AM, then back at 7:00 PM for the evening bite. Hydrate, sunscreen, and a marine VHF radio for any offshore run are non-negotiable. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast and produce dangerous lightning over open water.

Tarpon Still Around, Snook Closed

Tarpon are still being caught in good numbers in Boca Grande Pass and along the beaches at dawn. The big migration is past peak but legitimate fish are still in the system. Live crabs and threadfin on outgoing tide is the proven approach. Snook season is closed (catch-and-release only) June through August. Fish are around at dawn in the passes and dock lights, but harvest is off the table. Use heavy gear (8 lb tippet/40 lb leader minimum), handle gently, photograph in the water if possible.

Redfish, Trout — Dawn or Don’t Bother

Redfish are tailing on the dark-bottom flats at sunrise. Sight-casting opportunity with gold spoons or weedless soft plastics. By 9 AM the bite is over — fish have moved to deeper water. Same pattern for spotted trout — topwater plugs the first 45 minutes of light on the grass flats, then nothing until evening. The grass flats off Captiva and inside Pine Island Sound are the productive water at first light.

Offshore Action Building

Federal red snapper season is open (verify dates with NOAA). The inshore reefs in 80–120 feet are stacked with red snapper, gag grouper (when open), and amberjack. Mid-shelf wrecks in 120–180 feet for bigger fish. The water clarity is at its best of the year — sight-fishing offshore is possible. Kingfish on the color change at 25–35 miles. Sailfish releases are starting to show on the deeper edge.

Conditions, Hotspots, Regs

Water temps 84–88°F inshore, 82–84°F offshore. Florida saltwater license required. Federal reef fish endorsement required (free). Tarpon over 40 inches release-only. Snook closed (catch-and-release only). Red snapper bag varies — verify before harvest. Hotspots: Boca Grande Pass at dawn for tarpon, Tarpon Bay grass flats at sunrise for trout, inshore reefs at 80–120 ft for snapper. Tight lines and stay safe.

Boat Ramps and Heat Strategy

Punta Rassa ramp gets you to the pass and the Gulf for offshore snapper trips. Burnt Store Marina is the launch for Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor. Tarpon Bay Marina on Sanibel for inshore back lakes. August is brutal — be on the water by 5:30 AM, off by 10:00 AM, then back at 7:00 PM for the evening bite. Watch the afternoon thunderstorms — they build fast and produce dangerous lightning. Bring extra water, sunblock, and a marine VHF for any offshore trip. The fishing is excellent if you fish smart. Tight lines.
