Red snapper Lutjanus campechanusSnapper — Gulf and South Atlantic species

This week around Fort Myers and Sanibel, the summer snapper invasion is in full swing. Every dock, rock pile, and mangrove edge with current on it is holding fish, and the beach walkers are finding snook in the skinny troughs at dawn.

What’s Hitting

Mangrove snapper are the everywhere-fish right now — under the causeway, on the reefs, around the passes. Snook are cruising the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva in the first trough — Gulf season is closed, catch and release only. A few tarpon are still working the beach edges and passes, and trout are holding on the deeper grass of Pine Island Sound early in the morning.

Where to Find Them

The Sanibel Causeway spans, the rocks at Blind Pass, and the nearshore reefs off Fort Myers Beach are loaded with snapper. Beach snook are within a rod-length of dry sand from Bowman’s Beach to Knapp’s Point. Tarpon are off Knapp’s and the mouth of Boca Grande in small groups at first light.

Tides & Conditions

Decent morning tide flow this week, with the strongest movement mid-morning. Sound water is very warm — the trout bite is done early. Afternoon storms build over the Glades and push west; plan to be off the water by two.

Tackle & Tactics

Snapper want a small live shrimp or pilchard on a No. 1 hook with 15- to 20-pound fluorocarbon — chum and they will rise behind the boat. Beach snook eat small white flukes and live pilchards on light spinning gear. For the lingering tarpon, drift a crab on the tide at dawn.

Local Intel This Week

Punta Rassa near the causeway, the Sanibel boat ramp at the causeway islands, and Matanzas Pass in Fort Myers Beach are the main public launches. Fish are concentrating around the passes and structure with current. Snook are closed to harvest on this coast and snapper rules vary — check current FWC regulations and seasons before keeping fish.

This Week’s Tip

For summer snapper, current beats structure. A modest rock pile with tide ripping over it will out-fish a beautiful reef on slack water — plan your stops around the tide chart, not just the numbers.
