January is sailfish season in Palm Beach — the premier offshore fishery on the East Coast hits full peak. Snook stack on the inlets and ICW bridges, pompano continue in the surf, and the cold-front pattern delivers world-class fishing for those who can pick their weather windows.

Offshore — Sailfish at Peak

Palm Beach earned the nickname ‘Sailfish Capital of the World’ in January. The cold north winds push the fish south and bunch them in the relatively narrow band of warm Gulf Stream water just offshore of Palm Beach.

Kite fishing with live goggle-eyes, threadfin herring, or pilchards is the standard. Boats fly two kites with 2-3 baits per kite, plus a live bait or two on flat lines under the boat. The visual of multiple sails crashing baits in a spread is unforgettable.

Multi-fish days are common in January. The Buccaneer Cup and other tournament series have raised the level of competition, but the fish are plentiful enough that even casual charter customers can expect shots most days.

Wahoo, kingfish, and the occasional blackfin tuna fill the gaps between sailfish bites.

Inshore — Snook on Bridges, Inlet, Spillway

Snook stack at the Palm Beach Inlet jetty, Boynton Inlet jetty, and the major ICW bridges. The fish move toward the warmer inlet water during cold fronts and feed aggressively on outgoing tides.

Live mullet and threadfin pitched into the up-current shadow of the bridges at night produces the biggest fish. The S-5 (West Palm Beach Canal) spillway after a release is one of the iconic snook spots on the East Coast — fish stack below the spillway and feed on disoriented bait flushing through.

Florida snook regs: 28-32 inch slot, one per person per day in Atlantic FL. Use circle hooks when bait fishing.

Pompano — Continued Strong

Pompano action in the surf remains strong through January. The cold fronts continue to push fish along the beaches, and limit catches are common on the right tides at Juno, Carlin, Coral Cove, and the Palm Beach county beaches.

Sand fleas, fresh shrimp on Fishbites, and Doc’s Goofy jigs continue to produce. Fishing the first 2 hours of incoming tide after a front is the high-percentage approach.

Mutton Snapper

Mutton snapper bite on the deeper reefs continues around the moon phases. The January new moon and full moon are both productive windows.

Live pinfish on a knocker rig in 80 to 120 feet is the proven approach.

Cobia — Building

Cobia continue to push down the coast in January. The offshore wrecks and reefs in 80 to 150 feet hold the fish. Live eels and large bucktails are standard.

The peak Palm Beach cobia migration is March-April but January-February pre-migration fish are bigger and less pressured.

Pier and Beach

Juno Beach Pier is excellent in January. Pompano, whiting, croaker, jacks, and occasional kingfish on the end. Cold-front days can produce big king bites on the pier.

Beach snook fishing is possible on warmer afternoons but the bite is more concentrated at the inlets.

Conditions and Reality Check

Water temps in January cool to 68-72°F. The cold fronts continue to deliver the sailfish weather offshore and the pompano push inshore.

Wind is the determining factor. North winds make for great offshore sailfishing but rough seas. Calm windows between fronts are best for inlet and offshore mixed fishing.

Where to Be This Month

Offshore on the kite spread for sailfish (especially on north-wind days). Palm Beach Inlet and ICW bridges at night for snook. The county beaches on incoming tides for pompano. The deeper reefs around the moons for mutton snapper. And start scouting for early cobia on the offshore wrecks.
