April is Tampa Bay’s transition month — the winter pattern gives way to one of the most exciting coastal fisheries in Florida as cobia swarm through the bay passes in vast numbers following cownose rays. Water temperatures have climbed into the low 70s°F and every species is responding. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the Gulf passes are the epicenters of April’s action, but quality fishing is available throughout the 400-square-mile bay system.

Inshore Fishing — April 2026

Cobia — The April Highlight

Cobia are the story in Tampa Bay in April. Fish averaging 15–40 pounds follow massive schools of cownose rays through the passes — specifically Egmont Key Pass, Anna Maria Island, Mullet Key Channel, and the Sunshine Skyway area. The technique is pure sight-fishing: post on a flat or elevated position, spot cownose rays in schools, and intercept the cobia swimming alongside them. A live eel, live crab, or large Berkley Gulp! Swimming Mullet on a 1.5 oz jig head pitched ahead of a cruising cobia produces near-immediate strikes. Handle with heavy (30–50 lb) fluorocarbon leader — cobia are powerful, abrasive-flanked fish that run hard and bulldoze near the boat.

Shore anglers at the Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier have some of the best sight-fishing access available from any fixed structure in Florida — the pier extends into deep water where cobia pass on tidal migrations. Early morning on the incoming tide is the peak window.

Snook — Building Pre-Spawn Energy

Snook have come alive after the winter slowdown. Water temperatures above 70°F trigger aggressive feeding activity, and April fish are building toward their June spawn. Live pilchards under the Courtney Campbell Causeway, Gandy Bridge, and Howard Frankland Bridge are producing slot-size fish and occasional oversized snook. Dawn topwater sessions along the mangrove shorelines of Hillsborough Bay and Terra Ceia Bay are producing explosive surface strikes on Heddon Super Spooks and Yo-Zuri Mag Darters.

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are blitzing near the passes and on the beach side of the Skyway throughout April. Small 1/2 oz Clarkspoons behind a cigar float or 1/4 oz chrome Kastmasters cast into feeding schools produce fast action. Wire leader is essential — Spanish mackerel have razor-sharp teeth that cut through monofilament on every fish.

Seatrout

Spotted seatrout remain active on the grass flats throughout Tampa Bay. Gulfport, Weedon Island, and the Terra Ceia flats are producing well. A 1/4 oz chartreuse jig head with a 4″ Gulp! Shrimp worked over 4–6 foot grass edges is the most consistent technique. Popping corks with live shrimp beneath them work equally well, especially in choppy conditions when free-lining is difficult.

Offshore Fishing — April 2026

April marks the opening of Tampa Bay’s offshore season. Gag grouper on the nearshore ledges in 40–80 feet respond to live pinfish and cut squid. King mackerel are beginning their nearshore run — live sardine rigs at 20–40 feet on the nearshore reefs produce kings in the 10–25 pound range. Spanish mackerel are also abundant nearshore.

Top Techniques — April

1. Cobia sight-fishing from a polling platform or tower: Any elevated position helps — a tower boat, a flats skiff poled on a flat, or the elevated deck of the Skyway Pier all provide critical sight-line advantage. Move slowly, look into the water ahead for the distinctive dark shapes of cobia alongside lighter-colored rays.

2. Live crab for snook: A live blue crab (3–4 inches) free-lined on a 4/0 circle hook on 40 lb fluorocarbon through the bridge lights on an incoming tide is the highest-percentage snook technique in Tampa Bay in April. The crabs drift naturally in the current — snook that won’t respond to lures will readily take a well-presented live crab.

3. Kayak fishing the mangrove flats: A kayak provides near-silent access to the mangrove shorelines that produce the largest bay snook. Paddle to within 20 feet of overhanging mangroves, position ahead of current flow, and work a topwater lure back under the branches at first light.

Insider Tips

Watch the rays, not just the water. Cobia that aren’t immediately visible alongside rays often follow 20–30 feet behind the school. When a ray school appears, hold position and watch the full area behind them before moving.

The Skyway Fishing Pier is one of the best cobia fishing piers in Florida. The north pier produces cobia from the beginning of April through May. Arrive early (before 6am) to claim the best positioning on the east side of the pier where cobia most frequently pass during the incoming tide.
