Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are the most widely distributed and popular catfish species in North America — a hard-fighting, excellent-eating fish found from Montana to Florida in lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and ponds. Night fishing for channel cats is a summer tradition across the country, and fish exceeding 20 lbs are caught regularly from quality fisheries.

Where to Find Channel Catfish

Channel catfish range throughout most of the US east of the Rockies and have been widely introduced elsewhere. They prefer deeper areas of lakes and rivers — channel edges, tailwaters below dams, deep holes, and any area where current concentrates food. They’re particularly abundant in river systems and reservoirs throughout the Midwest and South. Primarily nocturnal feeders.

Best Tackle

Medium-heavy to heavy spinning or baitcasting: 7-9″ medium-heavy rod, 4000-6000 reel, 20-40 lb braid or monofilament. Strong rod for hook sets and pulling large fish from heavy cover.

Top Techniques

Bottom Fishing: The standard. A slip sinker rig (egg or no-roll sinker above a swivel, 18-24″ leader, and baited hook) cast to deep holes, channel edges, or current breaks. Let the bait sit — catfish find it by smell. Drift Fishing: Drift baits along river channels in a boat to cover more water. Effective in large rivers. Float Fishing for Drifting Bait: Use a slip float to present bait at specific depths in current.

Best Baits and Lures

  • Chicken Liver: The most popular channel cat bait — highly aromatic. Use treble hooks or mesh to keep it on. Fresh is better than frozen.
  • Cut Bait (shad, perch, bluegill): Fresh cut pieces of local forage fish. Excellent in river systems.
  • Stink Bait/Dip Bait: Commercial prepared baits in dip tubes, sponge hooks, or sponge worms. Highly effective, messy, and aromatic.
  • Nightcrawlers: A versatile, clean bait that catches catfish in all conditions.
  • Punch Bait: Thick, pasty commercial bait punched onto a treble hook. Fast and effective.

Seasonal Patterns

Summer: Peak catfish season. Fish at night near deep holes, channel edges, and below dams. The hottest months often produce the best catfishing. Spring: Pre-spawn catfish feed heavily near tributaries. Fall: Good feeding as fish prepare for winter. Winter: Fish stack in the deepest holes — slow presentation required but large fish possible.

Pro Tips

  • Fresh bait dramatically outperforms old bait — channel cats use their sense of smell to find food.
  • Fish at night — channel cats are primarily nocturnal feeders in warm months.
  • Find current breaks and deep holes — catfish stage in areas where current deposits food.
  • Use circle hooks to reduce gut-hooking and improve release survival.

Regulations

Channel catfish regulations vary by state. Most have no size limit or 12-15″ minimums with generous bag limits. Check your state DNR.
