Angler holding a striped bass on a rocky beachReader submission

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This Cape Cod fishing report is a seasonal outlook for the canal, the bay beaches and the outer Cape. The fall striped bass run is at its best in the canal as bait pours through on the tide, tautog hold on the rocks and bluefish are thinning. The east tide through the canal is the variable that decides the best fishing, with the strongest action at the tide change.

What’s Hitting

Striped bass are the headline, moving through the canal on the east tide and along the bay and outer beaches. Tautog hold on the rocky points and jetties, and bluefish are fewer as water cools. A few late false albacore may still appear in the elbow and Cape Cod Bay. Large bass often move through the canal at night. Night tides in the canal often produce the largest fish of the season, when big bass slide through the deeper water behind the bait.

Where to Find Them

Fish the Cape Cod Canal near the Sagamore Bridge and Bourne Bridge on the east tide, working the edges of the eddies. The beaches of Cape Cod Bay near Sandwich and Barnstable hold stripers at dawn and dusk. The rocky points of Wellfleet and the outer Cape hold tautog, and the Monomoy rips attract stripers feeding on sand eels. Shore anglers can also work the Cape Cod Canal’s service roads and the Herring Run area, which provide easy walk-in access.

Tides & Conditions

With the moon waning, current in the canal is easing, but the east tide remains the key window. Fish the first two hours of the east tide for the best action. Wind against current can create rough water in the canal and the bay, so check the marine forecast. Cold, windy mornings are common, so dress warmly. Plan trips around the east tide, since current flows toward Cape Cod Bay and carries bait with it. The west tide fishes differently and can be slower.

Tackle & Tactics

Bucktails, soft plastics and swimming plugs in the canal. Live eels at night. For tautog, green crabs or clams on a heavy jig. Use a medium-heavy rod with 30 pound braid and a 30 to 40 pound fluorocarbon leader. Cast up-current and let the lure swing through the eddies.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Scusset Beach State Reservation, Bourne Recreation Area and Sandwich Marina. Fish concentrate along the canal edges and on the bay beaches near bait. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, since striped bass rules are specific and change.

This Week’s Tip

Learn the eddies. Stripers hold on the edge of the current seam, so cast up-tide of the eddy and let your lure swing across it. Check the canal’s current direction before you commit. A fresh bait or lure dropped at the beginning of the east tide often outperforms later casts.
