Angler holding snook caught in Florida inshore watersFlorida snook from inshore Atlantic coast

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This Fort Lauderdale fishing report is a seasonal outlook for Broward County’s offshore, reef and inlet fisheries. Late October marks the start of sailfish season as fronts push bait south along the reef edge, while mahi and snapper stay active on the wrecks and weed lines. The main variable is wind: a northerly blow stirs the Gulf Stream edge but also triggers the sailfish bite.

What’s Hitting

Sailfish are the emerging target, with the first fish showing along the reef edge in 80 to 150 feet. Mahi are on floating debris and weed lines, and blackfin tuna hold in deeper water. Mutton snapper and gag grouper are available on the reefs and wrecks, and snook and tarpon gather around Port Everglades inlet lights at night. Nearshore reefs in 60 to 90 feet also hold kingfish and bonito, which make for a productive trip when sailfish are slow.

Where to Find Them

Run to the reef edge in 80 to 150 feet off Port Everglades for sailfish and kings, and look for weed lines and debris further offshore for mahi. The wrecks in 100 to 200 feet hold snapper and grouper. Inshore, the Port Everglades jetties, Hillsboro Inlet and the New River channel hold snook and tarpon around lights after dark. The Hillsboro Inlet area and the Pompano Beach pier provide additional options for anglers who prefer to fish near the coast.

Tides & Conditions

With the moon waning, current strength is moderating along the reef. The Gulf Stream runs close to shore in this area, so wind against current can create rough seas. Check the marine forecast before committing offshore. Inshore, the outgoing tide at the inlets is the best window for snook and tarpon after dark. Fronts are the story this time of year. The day before a northerly wind usually produces the best offshore action, and the day after often produces the cleanest water.

Tackle & Tactics

Live baits such as goggle-eyes, pilchards and threadfins on a kite or slow troll are the choice for sailfish. A trolled ballyhoo spread covers mahi and kings. For snapper on the wrecks, use a live bait or cut bait on 30 to 40 pound fluorocarbon. Circle hooks improve hookup and release for sailfish. Replace the leader after each strike on the wrecks, since toothy fish and sharp structure wear fluorocarbon quickly.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, the Hillsboro Inlet Park area and Port Everglades-area ramps. Fish concentrate along the reef edge, on weed lines offshore and at inlet lights at night. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, because many offshore species have specific rules. Another useful shore location is the Anglin’s Fishing Pier in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, which produces Spanish mackerel and snook at night.

This Week’s Tip

Watch the birds and the color change. Frigate birds and a clean blue edge near the reef often mark the bait that sailfish are following.
