King mackerel Scomberomorus cavallaKing mackerel — Atlantic and Gulf coast trophy

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This Destin fishing report is a seasonal outlook for East Pass, Choctawhatchee Bay and the nearshore Gulf. Late-season king mackerel are still around the beach and nearshore wrecks, flounder are staging near the pass, and sheepshead are moving onto the jetties. Wind and sea state decide whether offshore trips are practical.

What’s Hitting

King mackerel hold along the beach and nearshore wrecks as long as bait remains, though numbers decline as water cools. Flounder gather near East Pass and the bay channels ahead of their fall movement, and sheepshead are building on the jetty rocks and bridge pilings. Amberjack and grouper may be available on offshore wrecks depending on current seasons, and Spanish mackerel linger near the beach. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel hunt bait along the beach on calm mornings, giving smaller boats a close-to-shore option.

Where to Find Them

East Pass and the Destin jetties are the center of the fishing for flounder and sheepshead. Choctawhatchee Bay’s grass flats near Okaloosa Island hold speckled trout and redfish. Nearshore wrecks in 60 to 100 feet hold kings and amberjack, and the beach along Okaloosa Island holds pompano and whiting. Inside Destin Harbor, the Marler Bridge pilings and Norriego Point hold sheepshead and redfish on a moving tide.

Tides & Conditions

With the moon waning, tidal movement through East Pass is easing, but the outgoing tide still carries bait out. Slack tide is a good time for sheepshead. A northerly wind can make the pass choppy against the current, so check the marine forecast before heading out. Plan around the wind too. A strong west wind can make the East Pass inlet unsafe against the outgoing tide.

Tackle & Tactics

Live cigar minnows or blue runners on a wire leader for kings, slow-trolled near the wrecks. Mud minnows on a Carolina rig for flounder. Fiddler crabs or shrimp for sheepshead on a small strong hook. Use a stinger hook for kings to reduce cutoffs. A small silver spoon trolled at moderate speed produces Spanish mackerel along the beach in calm conditions.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes the East Pass jetties, Okaloosa Island Pier, Henderson Beach State Park and the Destin Harbor ramps. Fish concentrate at the pass and on nearshore wrecks. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, as many offshore species have specific seasons and limits. Another strong shore option is the Destin Harbor boardwalk and the HarborWalk Marina area, where anglers can reach pilings.

This Week’s Tip

Watch the bait on your sonar. Kings follow cigar minnows, so a thick school over a wreck is your signal to slow-troll through it. Slow the troll when kings are scattered. A bait drifting at about two knots looks more natural over a wreck, and it gives sluggish fish time to commit.
