Tarpon Continuing

July in Naples and Marco is when the tarpon scene shifts from peak frenzy to consistent reliable fishing. The 10,000 Islands channels, Coon Key Pass, and along the beaches are still holding fish — schools are smaller and more scattered than May/June but the bite is excellent for those who put in the time. Dawn at the passes on outgoing tide is the textbook window. Live mullet, threadfin, and crabs are the standard baits. Sight-casting to laid-up fish on calm mornings is producing for the dedicated. The 10K Islands area is generally a less-crowded option than Boca Grande for tarpon at this point in the season.

Snook in Summer Pattern — Catch-and-Release

Snook season is closed (catch-and-release only) through August 31. Fish are around — pass rocks at dawn, dock lights at night, deeper mangrove edges — but harvest is off the table. Use heavy gear (40-50 lb leader), get fish to the boat fast, support them in the water during photos, and revive properly before release. Heat-stressed snook can die hours after release if not handled carefully.

Redfish, Trout — Dawn Window

Inshore species are firmly in summer pattern. Spotted trout on grass flats at first light only — topwater plugs the first 45 minutes, then soft plastics. By 9 AM the bite shuts down until evening. Redfish are tailing on the dark-bottom flats at sunrise — sight-casting with gold spoons or weedless plastics. The flats of Rookery Bay and the back lakes of the 10K Islands are the productive water.

Offshore Tarpon and Snapper

Federal red snapper season is open (verify dates). Inshore reefs in 80–120 feet are loaded. Mahi-mahi on the offshore weedlines 20-30 miles out. Sailfish releases starting to show on the deeper edge. Spanish mackerel blitzing on bait pods along the beaches.

Conditions, Hotspots, Regs

Water temps 82–86°F inshore. Florida saltwater license required. Federal reef fish endorsement (free). Tarpon over 40 inches release-only. Snook closed (catch-and-release). Hotspots: Coon Key Pass at dawn for tarpon, Rookery Bay grass at first light for trout, the inshore reefs at 80–120 ft for snapper. Best ramps: Caxambas Park, Goodland Boat Park. Tight lines.

Boat Ramps and Summer Strategy

Caxambas Park boat ramp on Marco Island is the fastest launch for the 10,000 Islands and south Naples back lakes. Goodland Boat Park is an alternate. Cocohatchee Park ramp on the north end gives access to the Cocohatchee River and Wiggins Pass. July requires a strict early schedule — on the water by 5:30 AM, off by 10:00 AM, back at 7:00 PM. Watch afternoon thunderstorms over the 10K Islands and open Gulf. A marine VHF and extra water are essential for any offshore run. Tight lines.
