Daytona/Space Coast fishing report - Ponce Inlet • Mosquito Lagoon

February 2026 — Daytona / Space Coast: Mosquito Lagoon Sight-Fishing Prime, Permit at Sebastian Inlet. February is a late winter month with water in the 54-64°F range — sheepshead spawn peaks around full and new moons; cobia begin showing late month. Here’s the full breakdown of what’s biting, where to fish, and the most productive tactics.

What’s Biting — February 2026

Primary targets this month: Redfish, Seatrout, Sheepshead, Black Drum.

Redfish

Winter reds in Mosquito Lagoon (Edgewater, the Slot, Tiger Shoal), the Banana River north of the no-motor zone, the Indian River north of Titusville. Look for the warmest water — dark mud bottoms, deeper canals, creek mouths warming on afternoons. Gold spoons, scented soft plastics, live shrimp under a popping cork.

Seatrout

Trout holding in Mosquito Lagoon’s deep grass and potholes, the Banana River flats, the Indian River grass flats around Titusville. Live shrimp under a popping cork, soft plastic jigs in natural colors (root beer, new penny, opening night).

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are stacked for the winter/early-spring spawn. Target the Ponce Inlet jetty, the New Smyrna Beach bridges, the Sebastian Inlet jetty, and the docks of Titusville. Fresh fiddler crabs and live shrimp on a #1 or #1/0 octopus hook with minimal weight. Bites are subtle — set on the slightest tap. Vertical jigging tight to structure produces best.

Black Drum

Black drum (bull drum 30+ lb) on Mosquito Lagoon channel edges, the Indian River deeper holes, Ponce Inlet, and the back creeks of New Smyrna. Cut blue crab, fresh shrimp, or peeler crab on a 5/0-7/0 circle hook with enough weight to hold bottom. Slow, deliberate fishery — set the rod and wait for the rod to bend.

Water Conditions & Patterns

Water temperatures are running 54-64°F. Sheepshead spawn peaks around full and new moons; cobia begin showing late month. Mosquito Lagoon has almost no tide — it’s wind-driven. Look for clean water moving with wind direction. Ponce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet are the only true tide-driven fisheries.

Check the NOAA marine forecast and tide charts before launching. Wind direction often matters more than wind speed for inshore fishing — clean water beats churned water nine times out of ten.

Tactics & Tackle for This Month

  • Slow it down. Cold water means cold fish — work jigs, soft plastics, and live bait with patience. Bites are subtle.
  • Fish the warmest water. Dark-bottom flats, deeper canals, and creek mouths warm fastest. Afternoons usually outproduce mornings in winter.
  • Light fluorocarbon leader. 15-20 lb plenty for inshore — winter water is clear and fish are line-shy.

February Outlook

Winter patterns hold; cobia/spring migrations begin showing in southern waters by month-end.
