Late July on the Cape is the transition point of the season. The Canal is still producing on the right tide, the fluke fishing has been excellent on the sand, and the first bonito and false albacore of the year have shown up in the sounds — right on schedule.
What’s Hitting
Striped bass are the headline, with the best action on the Canal breaking tides at dawn and dusk. Most fish are in the 28- to 36-inch range with some larger ones mixed in. Fluke are steady and quality on the sandbars and in the channels around Monomoy and Nantucket Sound. Bluefish are widespread and aggressive. The first bonito have shown in Vineyard and Nantucket Sound, which is the earliest real sign of the fall run. Black sea bass are stacked on the structure.
Where to Find Them
The Canal fishes best on the east tide at first light — work the mussel beds and the current seams. Outside, the Race Point rips and Billingsgate Shoal are holding bass. Fluke are on the sand around Monomoy, the Handkerchief Shoal, and the channel edges in Nantucket Sound. Bonito are showing at the Hooter and along the Falmouth shoreline. Sea bass are on any hard structure in 50 to 90 feet. Squibnocket and the Elizabeth Islands rips are worth the run on a calm morning.
Tides & Conditions
The July 29 full moon has the Canal running hard, with strong breaking tides through midweek. Water temps are 68 to 72 in the sounds and low 60s on the backside. Southwest wind has been the daily pattern, building in the afternoon. Morning is flat and fishable, afternoon gets sloppy on the south side.
Tackle & Tactics
Canal fishing is a jig-and-pork or a heavy soft plastic on a 3-ounce head, plus a topwater pencil popper for the dawn window. Fluke want a bucktail tipped with Gulp, or a spearing-and-squid rig drifted on the sand. Bonito take a small epoxy jig or a Deadly Dick cast at busting fish and retrieved fast. Sea bass are a simple high-low rig with squid.
Local Intel This Week
The Sandwich Marina ramp, Barnstable Harbor ramp, and Sesuit Harbor in Dennis are the reliable public launches. The Canal service road offers excellent shore access along its full length. Fish are concentrating in the Canal and on the sand shoals rather than the shallow flats in this heat. Massachusetts striped bass rules include a slot limit and circle-hook requirements for bait — check current Massachusetts DMF regulations and seasons before keeping any fish.
This Week’s Tip
When the first bonito show, do not chase the breaking fish with the boat. Position up-current of the school, shut down, and let them come to you. A bonito school that gets run over once will not surface again in the same spot.
