August 2025 — Chesapeake Bay: Cobia, Tough Stripers. August is the hardest honest month on this bay — water in the upper 70s to mid 80s, a deep channel short of oxygen, and a rockfish fishery that gives back less than it asks. It is also peak cobia in the lower bay.

Cobia
The lower bay is the reason to launch a boat in August. Cobia are at peak along the buoy lines off Cape Charles, the shoals toward the CBBT, the Middle Grounds and Wolf Trap. Sight-casting needs sun overhead and a flat surface — a tower, or a cooler lid to stand on, buys the few feet of vision that decides the day. Heavy spinning gear, 60-pound fluorocarbon, a big bucktail or a live eel. Lead the fish and let the bait sink into its path; a jig landing on a cobia’s back sends it down. When it chops up, anchor-and-chum the reef numbers.
Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish
Spanish are through the lower and middle bay in numbers — the easiest limit available in August. Small Clarkspoons behind planers, trolled five to seven knots, faster than feels right. Diving birds find them. Bluefish are mixed in: snappers everywhere, the odd chopper in the rips.
Speckled Trout and Red Drum
Specks are on the Eastern Shore grass edges, the Poquoson and Mobjack shorelines, and the CBBT pilings — early and late, not midday. Soft plastics on a light jighead, topwater at first light. Puppy drum hold the same structure. Bull reds work the lower-bay shoals and the Tangier–Pocomoke water.
Striped Bass
This is the part of an August report nobody wants to write. The rockfish are there, but they are heat-stressed and lethargic and the month works against them. Fish the first hour of light in the rivers — Potomac, Rappahannock, Choptank — then stop. Release mortality in 85-degree water is a real problem — Maryland closes the fishery for the back half of July for exactly that reason. Single hooks, fish kept in the water, released fast. If you won’t fish that way, target something else until September.
Croaker, Spot and White Perch
The best kid fishing of the year. A bottom rig and bloodworm on hard bottom in the middle bay, around bridge pilings, along channel edges in 15 to 25 feet. Spot double as the best live bait in the bay.
Water Conditions & Patterns
August does one thing to this bay every year, and understanding it is most of the game.
The bay stratifies. Warm surface water sits on colder, denser, saltier water in the deep channel, and by August the layer underneath has run out of oxygen. The 40-foot channel drops I trust in June are dead water now. Fish get squeezed between water too warm above and water they cannot breathe below, and that band sits shallower than instinct says.
So go where current keeps the column mixed: bridge pilings, the CBBT, points with a rip, river mouths on a hard ebb. If you mark a wall of bait deep with nothing on it, the bait may be there precisely because nothing can follow it.
Wind inverts the day. A glassy morning is a cobia morning. A breezy afternoon ruins sight-casting but puts a chop on the shorelines and turns on the specks and puppy drum. August rarely gives you both.
Tactics & Tackle for This Month
- Fish the mixed water. Current-swept structure in 15 to 25 feet beats the deep channel edge.
- Go early or late. First light to 8 a.m., and the last hour of evening.
- Single hooks on rockfish. Trebles and 85-degree water are a bad combination.
August Outlook
The last two weeks are the turn. Nights give back a degree or two, bait schools organize, and as the deep water re-oxygenates the rockfish come back to life. If August has been frustrating, it is not you — it is the month. September is the payoff.
Regulations Reminder
Striped bass: Maryland’s Bay fishery reopened August 1 after the July 16–31 summer closure — one fish per person per day, 19- to 24-inch slot, through December 10. Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay season is closed in August: the spring/summer season ends June 15, and the fall season does not open until October. The Potomac and Virginia’s coastal area run on separate rules. Cobia: Virginia’s season runs into mid-September with a 40-inch minimum and a per-vessel cap. Red drum, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel and flounder are size- or slot-managed, and the numbers differ across the state line. Check Maryland DNR and VMRC directly before keeping a fish.
