King mackerel Scomberomorus cavallaKing mackerel — Atlantic and Gulf coast trophy

Destin fishing report for the week of October 1, 2026. The summer crowds are gone, the water is cooling, and the Emerald Coast is settling into one of its most productive stretches. Fall on the Panhandle means the bait moves along the beaches and the big predators follow it, and that pattern is building this week.

What’s Hitting

This week on the water, king mackerel are the top nearshore target. They are feeding on bait along the beaches and around the nearshore reefs, and some big fish are in the mix. Bull redfish are stacked in East Pass, especially on the outgoing tide. Offshore, amberjack and triggerfish are on the wrecks and reefs. Inside Choctawhatchee Bay, speckled trout and slot redfish are on the grass flats, and Spanish mackerel and bluefish are blitzing bait near the pass.

Where to Find Them

For kings, slow-troll live baits along the beaches and over the nearshore artificial reefs in 40 to 80 feet. For bull reds, fish East Pass on the outgoing tide and the beaches just east and west of the jetties. For amberjack, the deeper wrecks and natural bottom in 120 to 200 feet. For trout and slot reds, the grass flats in Choctawhatchee Bay near Crab Island, along with the bayous on the north shore.

Tides & Conditions

Tides are small on the Panhandle, and the last quarter moon this weekend softens them further. Water temperatures are in the upper 70s and slowly dropping. The first fall fronts typically bring a few days of north wind and clearer water, followed by excellent fishing as conditions settle. Watch the tropics and the marine forecast before heading offshore.

Tackle & Tactics

For kings, slow-troll live cigar minnows, menhaden, or blue runners on a wire stinger rig, or pull spoons behind planers. For bull reds, a fish-finder rig with a chunk of cut bait or a live pinfish on a 7/0 circle hook. For amberjack, a live blue runner or a heavy vertical jig on stout tackle. For trout, a popping cork with a live shrimp or a soft plastic.

Local Intel This Week

Public launches include the Joe’s Bayou Recreation Area ramp, the Destin Harbor area ramps, and the Henderson Beach area access for shore anglers. Shore anglers also do well at the Okaloosa Island Pier and the Destin jetties at East Pass. Fish are concentrated around the pass and along the beaches. Gulf reef fish seasons change from year to year, so check current FWC and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, including amberjack, and release bull reds over the slot.

This Week’s Tip

Kings often follow the bait right up to the beach in the fall. Before running offshore, idle along the beach and look for birds and bait schools. Some of the biggest kings of the year are caught within sight of the condos in October.
