The Indian River Lagoon stretches 156 miles from Ponce Inlet near Daytona Beach to Jupiter Inlet in Palm Beach County — one of the most biodiverse estuaries in the Northern Hemisphere and arguably the finest inshore redfish and snook fishery on the East Coast. The combination of pristine grass flats, mangrove shorelines, and excellent water quality (particularly in the central and southern sections) creates sight-fishing opportunities that rival anywhere in Florida.
Top Species
Inshore: Redfish (spectacular sight-fishing throughout the lagoon), snook, spotted seatrout, tarpon (especially from Sebastian Inlet south), permit at Sebastian Inlet, flounder, pompano (surf), black drum, and sheepshead.
Nearshore: King mackerel (fall bait run), cobia (spring), Spanish mackerel, and wahoo close to the Sebastian Inlet area.
Top Fishing Spots
- Mosquito Lagoon (northern IRL): The finest sight-fishing for redfish in the US — see the Daytona/Space Coast guide for full details.
- Sebastian Inlet: Florida’s most productive snook and permit fishery. The south jetty at Sebastian Inlet State Park produces extraordinary fishing for snook on the outgoing tide. Permit regularly take crab flies at the inlet.
- Pelican Island NWR area: Remote flat and mangrove system in the central IRL — excellent redfish and seatrout with minimal pressure.
- Vero Beach / Oslo Riverfront Park area: Accessible shore fishing for redfish and seatrout from the seawall and park areas.
- Jupiter Narrows (southern IRL): The southern terminus where the lagoon meets Jupiter Inlet — excellent snook, tarpon, and Jack crevalle. The Loxahatchee River mouth adds freshwater species to the mix.
Seasonal Calendar
Winter: Excellent redfish sight-fishing in clear, cool water. Snook in deeper holes and warm discharges. Permit at Sebastian Inlet on calm days.

Summer: Tarpon peak in the central lagoon and at Sebastian Inlet. Snook spawn offshore then return. Redfish active at dawn and dusk.
Fall: Best all-around season — redfish schooling, seatrout active, snook season reopens September 1.
