The Great Lakes are into their prime summer season. Lake Erie’s walleye fishing is at its peak in the western and central basins, Lake Michigan is giving up salmon and trout on the troll, and the smallmouth and perch fishing is filling out a strong all-around card.

What’s Hitting

Walleye are the headline on Lake Erie, schooling and chewing through the western and central basins. Lake Michigan is producing king salmon, coho, and lake trout on the troll. Smallmouth bass are on the reefs and rock, and yellow perch are stacking on the deeper structure.

Where to Find Them

Troll or drift for walleye across the Lake Erie reefs and open-water basins. Lake Michigan salmon are found over deep water off the ports on the troll. Smallmouth hold on the reefs and rocky structure, and perch stack on the deeper humps and flats. The Detroit River and the Lake Erie islands hold walleye and smallmouth, while the Lake Michigan harbors and piers hold salmon staging in the cooler mornings.

Tides & Conditions

Summer water has warmed and the walleye have set up in open-water schools. Calm to light-wind days make for comfortable trolling and drifting. The salmon troll fishes best in the early morning low light. Watch for afternoon winds that can build quickly on the big water.

Tackle & Tactics

Troll worm harnesses and crankbaits for Erie walleye, adjusting depth to the schools you mark. For Lake Michigan salmon, run spoons and flashers behind downriggers and dipsy divers at the right thermocline depth. Drop-shot and jig for smallmouth, and fish minnows or worms for perch. Worm harnesses and crankbaits behind boards and bottom bouncers cover Erie walleye; for Michigan salmon, spoons and flashers behind downriggers at the thermocline are the program.

Local Intel This Week

Launch from the Catawba Island or Mazurik (Marblehead) ramps for Lake Erie, and the major port ramps for Lake Michigan salmon. Walleye are concentrating on the reefs and open-water basins. Walleye and perch have size and bag limits that vary by lake and state — check current regulations before keeping fish. The Lake Erie metro park ramps and the Lake Michigan harbor piers give shore anglers access to walleye, perch, and staging salmon.

This Week’s Tip

For open-water Erie walleye, let your electronics do the work. Mark the bait and the fish, note the depth they’re holding, and set your harnesses and cranks to run right at that level — putting your spread in the strike zone is the whole game.
