January 2026 — Lake Fork TX: Pre-Spawn Bass Building, White Bass First Reports. January is a winter month with water in the 55-62°F range — bass moving to spawning areas; pre-spawn patterns; crappie schooling. Here’s the full breakdown of what’s biting, where to fish, and the most productive tactics.
What’s Biting — January 2026
Primary targets this month: Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish.
Largemouth Bass
Winter largemouth on the standing timber across the entire lake (Lake Fork is known for its preserved standing timber from when the lake was flooded in 1980), the deeper creek arms (Birch, Mustang, Coffee, Caney), the main lake humps and points, and the grass edges — Lake Fork has produced more 13+ lb bass than any lake in Texas. Jerkbaits (SPRO McStick), suspending crankbaits, jigs in heavy timber — slow presentations, deeper water.
Crappie
Winter crappie on the standing timber (the lake’s signature feature), the creek arm brush piles, the deeper main lake brush, and the dock structure — peak winter and early spring spawn. Schools stack on the deeper brush piles (15-25 ft) and creek channel edges. Small jigs vertically presented; minnows on light leaders. Slow presentation in cold water.
Channel Catfish
Channel catfish on the deeper main lake basin, the river channel, and the creek arm mouths — drift fishing with cut bait. Stink bait, chicken liver, cut shad, or nightcrawlers on the bottom. Slip sinker rigs in current; just-enough-weight rigs in slack water.
Blue Catfish
Blue catfish — the Potomac/Chesapeake trophy species — on the deeper main lake — Lake Fork produces 50+ lb blue catfish. Cut bait (gizzard shad, white perch heads, blueback herring) on 8/0-10/0 circle hooks. 50-80 lb braid. Big fish (50+ lb) routine; 100+ lb fish landed annually.
Water Conditions & Patterns
Water temperatures are running 55-62°F. Bass moving to spawning areas; pre-spawn patterns; crappie schooling. Lake Fork is a freshwater reservoir — no tides. Water level is managed by the Sabine River Authority. The standing timber is THE feature — fish hold on it year-round, and navigation requires care (run channels only). Lake Fork is a ‘slot lake’ for bass (16-24″ must be released) which has built and maintains its trophy reputation.
Check the NOAA marine forecast and tide charts before launching. Wind direction often matters more than wind speed for inshore fishing — clean water beats churned water nine times out of ten.
Tactics & Tackle for This Month
January Outlook
Cold-water patterns will continue through February, then transition begins late month into early March.
Regulations Reminder
Blue Catfish: No size or bag limit on Potomac and James (invasive — encouraged harvest). Always verify current state regulations before each trip — slots, bag limits, and seasons change.
