April 2026 — Maine Coast: First Stripers in Kennebec, Brookies and Salmon Open Water. April is a early spring month with water in the 42-50°F range — first stripers (NJ-side first, then Cape); winter flounder; mackerel arriving. Here’s the full breakdown of what’s biting, where to fish, and the most productive tactics.

What’s Biting — April 2026

Primary targets this month: Striped Bass, Brook Trout, Cod, Mackerel.

Striped Bass

Striper around the Kennebec River (one of the East Coast’s most productive striped bass rivers from May through October), the Saco River mouth, Sheepscot River, Damariscotta River, the rocky shorelines of Casco Bay, and the surf from Old Orchard Beach through Wells. Live and chunked bait; bucktails and soft plastics on lighter tackle.

Brook Trout

Brook trout in the wild trout streams of inland Maine — the Allagash, the Kennebec headwaters, Rangeley region, and Baxter State Park. Spring is prime — fish are in the smaller tributaries and shallows. Dry flies (Adams, Elk Hair Caddis), small streamers (Mickey Finn, Black Ghost), or live bait (worms, small minnows) on ultralight. Maine’s wild brookie streams are best in May-June.

Cod

Cod on the inshore wrecks and rocky bottom (when seasons open — verify NOAA), the offshore banks, and Jeffrey’s Ledge. Jigging diamond jigs (Norwegian-style 8-16 oz) or baited rigs (clams, squid) over wrecks and rocky bottom. Verify NOAA seasons/limits — strictly regulated.

Mackerel

Spanish mackerel at the rocky shoreline, the inshore from Kittery through Acadia in summer — a productive light-tackle and bait fishery. Small silver spoons (Clarks, Sea Striker) trolled 4-6 knots, Gotcha plugs, bucktail jigs on light spinning gear. Look for diving birds over bait pods.

Water Conditions & Patterns

Water temperatures are running 42-50°F. First stripers (nj-side first, then cape); winter flounder; mackerel arriving. Maine has 9-11 foot tidal range — among the highest on the U.S. East Coast — and tides dominate the inshore fishery. Striped bass push hard on outgoing tide at the river mouths. The Kennebec River bite peaks on the strongest tide changes; bait stages at the river mouth on outgoing.

Check the NOAA marine forecast and tide charts before launching. Wind direction often matters more than wind speed for inshore fishing — clean water beats churned water nine times out of ten.

Tactics & Tackle for This Month

  • Striped bass arrival. First fish appear in Buzzards Bay, then Cape Canal, then through the Cape and Maine waters.
  • Canal early. Pre-dawn west-tide for the legendary Cape Cod Canal striper bite.

April Outlook

Peak spring migrations — cobia (Gulf/SE), striped bass (mid-Atlantic), spawning movements everywhere.

Regulations Reminder

Striped Bass: Federal slot typically 28-31″ with state variations; verify ASMFC and state rules annually. Always verify current state regulations before each trip — slots, bag limits, and seasons change.
