February 2026 — Maine Coast: Late Winter — Ice Fishing Holding, First Steelhead Talk. February is a deep winter month with water in the 34-40°F range — cod/haddock offshore in season; otherwise mostly closed. Here’s the full breakdown of what’s biting, where to fish, and the most productive tactics.

What’s Biting — February 2026

Primary targets this month: Cod, Haddock, Landlocked Salmon, Brook Trout.

Cod

Cod on the inshore wrecks and rocky bottom (when seasons open — verify NOAA), the offshore banks, and Jeffrey’s Ledge. Jigging diamond jigs (Norwegian-style 8-16 oz) or baited rigs (clams, squid) over wrecks and rocky bottom. Verify NOAA seasons/limits — strictly regulated.

Haddock

Haddock on Jeffrey’s Ledge, the inshore wrecks, and the offshore banks — the primary New England groundfish target. Lighter tackle than cod (50-80 lb), smaller hooks (5/0-6/0 circle), with clams or sea worms. Year-round in NE waters.

Landlocked Salmon

Landlocked salmon through the ice on the Maine lakes — Sebago, Moosehead, Square Pond, Rangeley — open-water trolling in spring and fall, ice fishing in winter. Tip-ups with live smelt on quick-strike rigs; jigging spoons tipped with smelt. Early-ice and late-ice are the prime windows.

Brook Trout

Brook trout through the ice on the wild trout streams of inland Maine — the Allagash, the Kennebec headwaters, Rangeley region, and Baxter State Park. Tip-ups with small minnows, jigging spoons tipped with waxworm or maggot, small jigs. Maine’s remote ponds produce.

Water Conditions & Patterns

Water temperatures are running 34-40°F. Cod/haddock offshore in season; otherwise mostly closed. Maine has 9-11 foot tidal range — among the highest on the U.S. East Coast — and tides dominate the inshore fishery. Striped bass push hard on outgoing tide at the river mouths. The Kennebec River bite peaks on the strongest tide changes; bait stages at the river mouth on outgoing.

Check the NOAA marine forecast and tide charts before launching. Wind direction often matters more than wind speed for inshore fishing — clean water beats churned water nine times out of ten.

Tactics & Tackle for This Month

  • Offshore wrecks only. Cod and haddock when seasons open; otherwise wait for spring.
  • Use the down time to organize gear, plan trips, and pre-tie leader spools.

February Outlook

Winter patterns hold; cobia/spring migrations begin showing in southern waters by month-end.

Regulations Reminder

Verify current state regulations before each trip.
