October: Pompano Return, Mullet Run Tails Off

October in Palm Beach is the pivot from summer to the long stretch of cool-weather fisheries. The mullet run is in its final weeks early in the month, then the action transitions to pompano in the surf, snapper on the reefs, and the first early-season sailfish bite by month’s end. The water cools steadily from the upper 80s into the high 70s, and that drop is what triggers the whole sequence. Beach anglers should be ready with sand-flea rigs and a long rod; offshore boats can look for the year’s first sails working the patches in 100–150 feet.

Tackle & Technique

For pompano surf fishing, a 10–12 foot surf rod with a 4000–6000 size spinning reel handles the typical 1.5–3 oz pyramid sinker rigs. Run a two- or three-hook drop rig with #1 or #2 circle hooks and small bits of Fishbites Sandflea or fresh sand fleas where you can find them. Cast just past the first sandbar and let the rig swing in the trough. For offshore mangrove and mutton snapper, drop bigger live pilchards or whole sardines on 30–40 lb fluoro leader with a 4/0 circle hook in 60–120 feet of water.

Inshore in October

Snook are still strong in the inlets early October as they wrap up the mullet run feed. Use big swimbaits, large topwater plugs, or live mullet — the strikes are explosive. As October progresses, snook push back into the intracoastal and start sliding into their winter holes. Tarpon are still around but thinning out; spotted seatrout pick up in the grass flats as water temps drop.

Conditions to Watch

Hurricane and tropical storm season is still active in October, which can shut down the offshore game for days at a time but often improves the post-storm beach fishing. Watch the long-range tropical forecasts and plan around them. The first cold fronts of the season typically arrive mid-to-late October — when one passes, fish the leeward beach the day after for outstanding pompano action.

Captain’s Tip

October pompano fishing is a strolling game, not a sitting game. If you haven’t had a bite in 20 minutes, move 100 yards down the beach. Pompano travel in pods along the trough; you’re looking for the fish, not waiting for them to find you. Mark the productive spots with a stake or GPS and come back to them in subsequent days — those holes tend to hold fish across the whole season.
