Gulf Coast surf fishing offers a warm-water year-round fishery that is fundamentally different from the Northeast in character — shallow, sandy beaches, clearer water, and a diverse mix of inshore species within easy casting range. From the Florida Panhandle through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the full length of the Texas coast, the Gulf surf produces redfish, pompano, speckled trout, sharks, jack crevalle, flounder, and — in season — red snapper from the state-waters piers.

Primary Gulf Coast Surf Species
| Species | Season | Best Bait | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redfish (Red Drum) | Year-round (peaks fall) | Fresh shrimp, cut mullet, crab | Wade the surf edge at dawn; channel bass in fall are the biggest fish |
| Pompano | Spring and fall migrations | Sand crabs (mole crabs), fresh shrimp | Fastest-moving fish in the surf; fight dramatically on light gear |
| Speckled Trout | Year-round (peaks fall/winter) | Soft plastic shrimp, live shrimp under cork | Work the first gut/trough behind the initial breaker line |
| Whiting (Sea Mullet) | Year-round | Fresh shrimp, sand crabs, bloodworms | Two-hook dropper rig in the first trough; excellent eating |
| Jack Crevalle | Late spring through fall | Metal jigs, live bait | Migrate in large schools; explosive fighters on light tackle |
| Sharks | Late spring through fall | Fresh cut mullet, ladyfish, bonita chunks | Blacktip, spinner, and Atlantic sharpnose most common |
| Flounder | Fall migration (October–November) | Live finger mullet, soft plastics | Gulf passes and beach cuts during fall migration |
Gulf Coast Surf Fishing Rigs
Pompano Rig
The standard Gulf Coast pompano rig is a two-hook dropper rig with a 2–3 oz pyramid sinker at the bottom and two dropper loops spaced 6–8 inches apart with size 1–1/0 Kahle or J-hooks. Bait with fresh sand crabs (dig from the swash zone at low tide with your feet — they’re present just below the sand surface wherever waves wash up and back). A fist-sized ball of sand crabs tied loosely around the hook with elastic thread is the high-percentage pompano approach used by dedicated Gulf Coast pompano chasers. Add a small fluorescent orange or pink float directly on the leader above the bait — pompano respond to the visual target and the float keeps the bait off the bottom just enough to improve presentation.
Redfish Surf Rig
A fish finder rig with a 2–4 oz pyramid sinker, 20 lb fluorocarbon leader, and 3/0–5/0 circle hook baited with fresh shrimp, cut mullet, or blue crab is the workhorse Gulf Coast redfish rig. Cast to the first gut (the trough between the initial bar and the beach) and hold the rod in a sand spike — redfish often hook themselves as they run with the bait against the circle hook. Dawn and dusk are the most productive windows.
Best Gulf Coast Surf Fishing Beaches
- Pensacola Beach, FL — Navarre Beach and Fort Pickens (Gulf Islands National Seashore) produce excellent pompano in spring and fall and redfish year-round.
- Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL — The beaches around Gulf State Park are among the most productive in Alabama for pompano, whiting, and sharks.
- South Padre Island, TX — 34 miles of beach, 4WD access in many areas. Redfish, speckled trout, pompano, and shark.
- Padre Island National Seashore, TX — The longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. 70 miles of pristine surf fishing for redfish, trout, and flounder. High-clearance 4WD required beyond the first 5 miles.
- Galveston Island, TX — Accessible, productive, and consistent for pompano, redfish, and whiting throughout the year.
