Cobia caught FloridaPhoto: fishing.digital

Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) — called ling, lemonfish, or crabeater — are one of the most exciting inshore/nearshore targets on the East and Gulf coasts. Powerful, aggressive, and frequently found free-swimming near the surface following rays, sharks, and buoys, cobia are often sight-fished and cast to directly — one of the most heart-pounding moments in coastal fishing. They’re also exceptional table fare.

Where to Find Cobia

Cobia range from the Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, with concentrations in the Bay, Carolinas, Florida, and Gulf Coast. They’re highly migratory, making a dramatic spring run up the East Coast from March through June. Often seen swimming alone or in small groups near rays, sharks, buoys, channel markers, and floating debris. They tolerate a wide salinity range and are found in bays, sounds, and offshore waters.

Best Tackle

Rod: 7–8″ medium-heavy to heavy spinning or conventional. Reel: 4000–6000 spinning or 30-size conventional with 50 lb braid. Leader: 60–80 lb fluorocarbon — cobia are strong and will test your gear. Hook: 7/0–10/0 circle or J-hook for live bait; 1/0–4/0 jig hook for artificials.

Top Techniques

Sight Casting: The most exciting method. Pole a boat along the beach, inlet, or bay looking for cobia following rays or swimming near the surface. When spotted, make a precise cast 3–5 feet ahead of the fish and begin a slow retrieve. Don’t cast on top of the fish. Live Bait Under Buoys and Markers: Anchor near a buoy or channel marker and pitch live eels, pinfish, or crabs to cobia holding around it. Jigging: Eel imitation soft plastics, bucktail jigs, and paddle tails retrieved slowly near the bottom or mid-column. Extremely effective even when fish aren’t visible.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Live Eel: The number one cobia bait everywhere. Free-lined near the surface for sight-cast fish.
  • Live Crab (blue or spider): Excellent for Chesapeake Bay cobia. Free-lined or on a minimal weight.
  • Live Pinfish or Spot: Good all-around live bait near structure and buoys.
  • Buck Tail Jig with Eel Trailer: Versatile — cast to visible fish or jig blind near structure.
  • Paddle Tail Swimbait (5–7″): Effective blind-casting in areas holding cobia.
  • DOA Eel (soft plastic): Excellent cobia lure retrieved very slowly near the bottom.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring (March–June): The migration is the prime time. Cobia flood into the Chesapeake Bay in May and June — sight-fishing from boats for cruising fish is one of the most popular events in Bay fishing. Florida’s east and west coasts see the spring run in March–April. Summer: Present in the Bay and Gulf throughout summer, often around offshore structure. Fall: Return migration south brings fish past Florida inlets again.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t spook the fish: Cobia are wary of boat pressure. Cut the engine 100+ yards from a visible fish and use a trolling motor or push pole to close the distance.
  • Cast ahead: Lead cobia by 5–10 feet. Casting directly on them spooks them instantly.
  • Fight aggressively: Cobia are extremely powerful and will sound (dive) repeatedly. Apply maximum pressure and don’t give them slack.
  • Have a gaff ready: Cobia over 20 lbs should be gaffed. A lip grip is not sufficient for large fish.
  • Don’t bring a green fish aboard: A green cobia in the boat is dangerous — 50+ lb fish thrashing on a deck have injured anglers. Make sure the fish is subdued.

Regulations

Cobia: 33″ fork length minimum, 1 fish per person per day on the Atlantic coast. Gulf regulations are similar. Check current NOAA regulations for your specific region.
