Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) are the inshore angler’s speed demon — fast, aggressive, and available to surf, pier, and boat anglers across the East Coast and Gulf. They’re not as large as kings but they’re far more accessible, often feeding just beyond the surf zone, around piers, and in the mouths of inlets. For light tackle anglers they’re one of the most fun fish that swims.

Where to Find Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel range from the Chesapeake Bay south through the Gulf of Mexico. They’re highly migratory, moving north in spring and south in fall. Found in nearshore coastal waters, passes, and occasionally inside bays. They prefer clean, clear water and are almost always associated with bait schools — find the bait, find the Spanish.

Best Tackle

Rod: 7″ medium spinning. Reel: 3000–4000 size with 15–20 lb braid. Leader: 20–30 lb fluorocarbon (or light wire if getting cut off). Spanish mac teeth are sharp but a 20 lb fluoro leader usually holds.

Top Techniques

Trolling: Troll Clark Spoons or Drone Spoons at 5–7 knots near bait schools and color lines. The most consistent method for covering ground and finding fish. Casting: When fish are breaking on the surface, cast metal spoons, small jigs, and Gotcha plugs into the blitz. High-speed retrieve. Live Bait Under Float: A small live pilchard or finger mullet under a float drifted near breaking fish.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Clark Spoon / Drone Spoon: The classic Spanish mackerel lure. Troll on a wire line or mono at 5–7 knots. Size 00 or 0.
  • Gotcha Plug: The go-to casting lure. Silver/chartreuse, silver/pink, and all-silver are top producers. Deadly cast into breaking fish.
  • Small Metal Jigs (Kastmaster 3/4 oz): Cast and retrieve fast through schooling fish.
  • DOA Shrimp / Small Paddletail: Effective when fish are less aggressive and need a slower presentation.
  • Live Pilchards or Finger Mullet: Best live bait for larger specimens.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring (March–May): Spanish arrive with the warming water — one of the first offshore signs of spring on the East Coast. Summer: Present all along the East Coast and Gulf. Pier fishing is excellent. Fall: Southern migration produces dense schools close to shore — excellent surf and pier fishing. Winter: Present year-round in South Florida and the Gulf.

Pro Tips

  • Speed matters: Fast retrieve triggers Spanish — slow down only if they’re ignoring fast presentations.
  • Use a light wire or heavy fluoro: Spanish teeth aren’t as bad as kings but a long fight gives them time to cut through light leader.
  • Dress neatly: Spanish blood stains clothes instantly and permanently. Wear old clothes or full rain gear.

Regulations

Spanish mackerel: 12″ minimum, 15 fish per person in most Atlantic states. Gulf regulations vary. Check current NOAA regulations.
