The white marlin (Kajikia albida) is the Mid-Atlantic’s premier big-game species — a sleek, athletic billfish that provides some of the most spectacular offshore action available on the East Coast. The Ocean City, Maryland White Marlin Open is one of the world’s largest and most lucrative fishing tournaments, with prize pools exceeding $10 million. White marlin are smaller than blue marlin (typically 40–80 lbs) but are far more abundant and accessible, making them the most frequently encountered billfish in the Mid-Atlantic canyons.

Where to Find White Marlin

White marlin range throughout the tropical and subtropical Atlantic. The Mid-Atlantic canyons — Washington, Baltimore, Norfolk, Wilmington, and Hudson — are among the most productive white marlin grounds in the world during summer. Water temperatures of 72–82°F and high current activity in the warm Gulf Stream eddies that penetrate the canyon edges concentrate marlin and their baitfish prey. They also occur off Florida, the Gulf, and the Caribbean.

Best Tackle

IGFA 30 lb class: Standard for white marlin. 7′ 30 lb class conventional rod, 30W reel, 30 lb monofilament or 50 lb braid, 80 lb fluorocarbon leader 15 feet. Lighter tackle maximizes the fight but requires exceptional angler skill and a knowledgeable captain.

Top Techniques

Trolling with Live and Dead Bait: The standard approach. Troll rigged ballyhoo (with and without skirts) at 6–8 knots. When a white marlin is raised on a teaser, pull the teaser and pitch a live bait or rigged ballyhoo to the lit-up fish — called a “pitch bait” technique. Kite Fishing: Live bait on a kite is an extremely effective white marlin presentation, particularly in Florida. Dredge Fishing: A dredge (a teaser array of rigged baits or artificial squid) attracts marlin to the boat’s wake, where they can be teased to the surface and pitched a hook bait.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Rigged Ballyhoo (naked or with skirt): The definitive white marlin bait worldwide. Rig on a 7/0–8/0 hook with a loop for easy live-baiting conversion.
  • Live Goggle Eyes or Tinker Mackerel: Premier pitch baits when whites are following teasers.
  • Skirted Lures (Ilander, Mold Craft): Trolled as teasers and occasionally as hook baits.
  • Swimming Ballyhoo (chin-weighted): Runs with a natural swimming action — very effective for whites that are following but won’t bite standard rigged baits.

Seasonal Patterns

Summer (June–September): Peak season in the Mid-Atlantic canyons. August is the traditional White Marlin Open month at Ocean City — the largest white marlin tournament in the world. Spring/Fall: White marlin present off Florida and in the Gulf.

Pro Tips

  • Watch the teaser: White marlin follow teasers for extended periods before committing. Pull the teaser away from the fish (not too fast) while simultaneously pitching a bait to the now-eager fish.
  • Circle hooks are now required: NOAA requires non-offset circle hooks for white marlin fishing in federal waters. These hooks improve release rates and are actually more effective than J-hooks for marlin.
  • Release promptly and properly: Always release white marlin — the population is under pressure. Keep the fish in the water, remove the hook (or cut the leader), and let the fish swim away under its own power.

Regulations

White marlin are catch-and-release only in US federal waters. It is illegal to retain any white marlin unless under a specific federal permit. Circle hooks are required. Non-offset circle hooks only in federal waters east of the continental US.
