Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) are the East Coast’s most ferocious inshore predator — a slashing, frenzied pack hunter with razor teeth, explosive speed, and a seemingly insatiable appetite. When a school of bluefish is in a feeding blitz, virtually anything that moves gets eaten. From the surf at Assateague to the rips off Montauk, bluefish provide accessible, exciting fishing for anglers at every level.
Where to Find Bluefish
Bluefish range from Maine to Florida, migrating north in spring and south in fall. They follow baitfish migrations closely — find the bunker, find the blues. They’re found in the surf, bays, inlets, nearshore waters, and occasionally well offshore. Schools of feeding bluefish are announced by frenzied surface activity, diving birds, and oil slicks from blended baitfish (called “Bluefish weather”).
Best Tackle
Bluefish are hard fighters but not picky. Medium to medium-heavy spinning (7″ rod, 4000–6000 reel, 20–30 lb braid) handles most situations. Wire leader or 40–60 lb fluorocarbon is essential — bluefish teeth cut through lighter leader instantly. A single-strand wire leader (18–24″) eliminates cut-offs completely.
Top Techniques
Almost anything works when blues are feeding. Casting metals and poppers into a surface blitz is the most exciting approach. Trolling Clark Spoons or umbrella rigs locates scattered fish. Chunking bunker from an anchored boat holds large fish in a chum slick.
Best Baits & Lures
- Metal Jigs (Kastmaster, Deadly Dick): Cast into breaking fish and retrieve as fast as possible.
- Poppers: Explosive surface strikes in breaking fish or at dawn/dusk near bait schools.
- Cut Bunker (Menhaden): Best live/cut bait for large “chopper” bluefish.
- Clark Spoon: Trolled at 5–8 knots near bait schools.
- Bucktail Jig: Effective near the bottom in inlets and channels.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring arrival coincides with the bunker run (April–May). Summer peak action in the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Fall migration produces the best fishing as large fish move south, often coming within easy casting distance of the surf.
Pro Tips
- Wire leader is non-negotiable: You will lose lures to bluefish teeth without wire. Use it always.
- Bluefish bleed heavily: Have a cooler with ice ready — bluefish flesh degrades rapidly without chilling.
- Handle with care: Those teeth are designed to cut. Use a lip gripper or hold behind the head.
Regulations
Bluefish: 10 fish per person per day on the Atlantic coast currently. Check current ASMFC regulations — limits have changed in recent years as the stock has declined.
