August 2025 — Chesapeake Bay: Bluefish. August is a peak summer month with water in the 74-80°F range — OFFSHORE peak — white marlin, yellowfin, mahi; cobia (lower bay/CBBT). Here’s the full breakdown of what’s biting, where to fish, and the most productive tactics.

What’s Biting — August 2025

Primary targets this month: Cobia, Red Drum, Spanish Mackerel, Croaker.

Cobia

Cobia around the lower Bay — the world’s premier cobia sight-fishing fishery — the buoy lines off Cape Charles, the Bay mouth, and the CBBT in summer — keep an eye on stone crab and shrimp buoys for cruising fish. Live eels, large pinfish, and 3-6 oz bucktails.

Red Drum

Red drum (bull redfish) at the lower Bay (around the Bay mouth), the Eastern Shore creeks, and the Tangier-Pocomoke area in summer/fall. The OBX surf fishery — cut menhaden, mullet, or shrimp on heaver tackle (10-12′ surf rod, 6500-class reel). 6/0-9/0 circle hooks. Falling tide concentrates bait.

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel at the lower Bay (Tangier Sound, the Bay mouth) in July through September. Small silver spoons (Clarks, Sea Striker) trolled 4-6 knots, Gotcha plugs, bucktail jigs on light spinning gear. Look for diving birds over bait pods.

Croaker

Croaker on the entire Bay in summer — channel edges, structure, and the bay floor in 15-30 feet. Bottom fishing with cut squid, sea worms, or shrimp on small hooks. Easy entry-level fishery — kids will pull a fish a cast on the right tide.

Water Conditions & Patterns

Water temperatures are running 74-80°F. Offshore peak — white marlin, yellowfin, mahi; cobia (lower bay/cbbt). The Bay’s tidal range is modest (1-3 feet) but the volume of moving water creates strong currents at choke points — Bay Bridge pilings, the CBBT, the Susquehanna Flats, and the major river mouths. Two hours either side of high tide produce best on most structure.

Check the NOAA marine forecast and tide charts before launching. Wind direction often matters more than wind speed for inshore fishing — clean water beats churned water nine times out of ten.

Tactics & Tackle for This Month

  • Canyon offshore peak. White marlin, yellowfin, mahi 50-70 miles offshore — long days but lights-out fishing.
  • Cobia (Lower Bay). Sight-fishing the CBBT and Cape Charles buoy lines — peak window.

August Outlook

Peak summer — offshore prime (canyon billfish, deepwater snapper); inshore challenging in heat.

Regulations Reminder

Cobia: 36″ fork length, one per harvester (FL state waters — verify current rules). Red Drum: 18-27″ slot, 1 per day in most states. Some states allow one trophy fish over slot. Always verify current state regulations before each trip — slots, bag limits, and seasons change.
