This week, Lake Erie walleye are the volume play — limit-style fishing continues in the Central Basin with fish suspended over 60 to 75 feet of water, and the Western Basin still producing early and late around the islands. On Lake Michigan, kings in the teens are feeding aggressively on the alewife schools in 80 to 150 feet from Wisconsin’s mid-lake banks to the Michigan side, with the first hints of the August staging push showing off the river mouths. Steelhead are on the temperature breaks lake-wide, and Saginaw Bay walleye are steady on crawler harnesses.

Erie walleye: the deep water north of Ashtabula through Erie, PA — trust the graph and fish the marks, not the memory. Kings: the 45- to 55-degree band down 60 to 110 feet on the big structure — the Bank off Milwaukee, the projects off Ludington. Steelhead: the surface scum lines and temp breaks over deep water.

No tides out here, but the full moon still matters — expect the kings to feed harder at night and the dawn troll to improve through the weekend. Water temps are at their summer peak, which means the thermocline is sharp and the fish are glued to it.
Tackle & Tactics
Erie: crawler harnesses and small crankbaits off boards, 50 to 70 feet back on divers or 2- to 3-ounce inline weights. Kings: flasher-fly combos on the downriggers at the thermocline, a mag spoon on the wire diver doing the damage. Steelhead: bright orange spoons on high lines and planer boards well away from the boat.
