Southwest Florida is hot, wet, and on a dawn schedule. Daily storms have pushed fresh water into the backcountry, which has actually helped — the fish have concentrated at the pass mouths and along the outside creek edges where the cleaner salt water sits.
What’s Hitting
Snook are the headline. Spawning aggregations are holding in Gordon Pass, Doctors Pass, and Big Marco Pass, and they will eat hard on the outgoing. Season is closed through August, so it is catch-and-release only. Redfish are in the backcountry creeks and around the oyster bars on the higher tides. Mangrove snapper are thick on the nearshore reefs and every dock with depth. Tarpon are still around in reduced numbers off the beaches and in the passes at night, and trout are on the deeper grass at daybreak.
Where to Find Them
Fish the down-current sides of Gordon Pass and Big Marco Pass on the outgoing for snook. Redfish are in the Ten Thousand Islands creek mouths and on the bars near Rookery Bay on the last of the flood. Snapper are on the nearshore reefs in 25 to 40 feet and around the Naples Pier and Marco bridge structure. Trout are on the 4- to 6-foot grass in Rookery Bay and the Marco River early.
Tides & Conditions
Strong tides off the July 29 full moon are running through midweek. Water temps are 88 to 90 in the backcountry and mid-80s nearshore. Backcountry water is tannic and fresh-influenced from the daily rain — the cleaner water near the passes is where the fish are. Storms build by 2 p.m. every day.
Tackle & Tactics
Pass snook want a 1-ounce flair hawk or a live pilchard on 40-pound fluoro fished right on the bottom in the current. Redfish take a gold spoon or a soft plastic on a 1/8-ounce jighead worked slowly along the bars, or a live shrimp under a popping cork. Snapper are a small hook, 20-pound fluoro, and live shrimp. For trout, a popping cork or a suspending twitchbait over grass at first light.
