Sarasota fishing report for the week of October 1, 2026. The transition from summer to fall is underway on the Suncoast. Snook are leaving the beaches and moving back into the bays, the redfish are schooling up on the flats, and the passes are full of bait and mackerel. If the weather cooperates, this can be one of the best months of the year.

What’s Hitting

What’s hot this week: snook are feeding along the mangrove shorelines and around the docks as they move back into the bays from the beaches. Redfish are schooling on the flats of Sarasota Bay and Little Sarasota Bay. Spanish mackerel are blitzing bait in the passes and along the beaches, and there are a few false albacore mixed in. Speckled trout are on the grass flats, and tarpon are thinning out but still around the passes.

Where to Find Them

For snook, fish the mangrove shorelines in Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay, and Little Sarasota Bay, along with the docks along the Intracoastal. For redfish, look on the flats near Longboat Key, the flats around the Siesta Key area, and in Little Sarasota Bay. For Spanish mackerel, fish New Pass, Big Pass, and Longboat Pass, and look for birds working bait along the beaches. Trout are on the deeper grass flats in Sarasota Bay.

Tides & Conditions

Tides are moderating with the last quarter moon. Water temperatures are in the low 80s and dropping. The wind is often light in October, which makes sight-fishing on the flats possible. Watch for red tide reports, which can affect fishing along the beaches and in the bays this time of year; check the FWC red tide status before you go.

Tackle & Tactics

For snook along the mangroves, a live pilchard or a soft plastic jerk bait. For redfish, a gold spoon or a paddle tail. For Spanish mackerel, a small spoon or a Gotcha plug retrieved fast, with a short wire leader or 40-pound fluorocarbon. For trout, a popping cork with a live shrimp. Light spinning tackle is all you need for most of this fishing.

Local Intel This Week

Public launches include the Ken Thompson Park ramp near New Pass, the Centennial Park ramp in Venice, and the Turtle Beach ramp on Siesta Key. Shore anglers have good access at the Ken Thompson Park pier, the Venice Fishing Pier, and the Siesta Key area beaches. Fish are concentrated along the mangroves for snook and in the passes for mackerel. Check current FWC regulations, red tide advisories, and seasons before keeping fish.

This Week’s Tip

Spanish mackerel move fast and follow the bait. When you see birds diving and fish breaking the surface, get there quickly but shut down well upwind and drift into the action. A fast retrieve is key; mackerel rarely chase a slow lure.
