Fort Myers and Sanibel fishing report for the week of October 1, 2026. Fall is starting to show in Southwest Florida. The water is cooling off a few degrees, the redfish are schooling in Pine Island Sound, and the snook are moving back from the beaches into the backcountry. This is one of the best times of year to fish the sound.

What’s Hitting

This week on the water, redfish are the top target. Schools are roaming the flats of Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass, and they are feeding aggressively on the higher tides. Snook are at the passes, Redfish Pass, Captiva Pass, and Blind Pass, and moving onto the mangrove shorelines inside. Speckled trout are on the grass flats in Pine Island Sound. There are also Spanish mackerel, jacks, and ladyfish in the passes, and sheepshead are starting to show around the docks and bridges.

Where to Find Them

For redfish, the flats along the east side of Pine Island Sound, around the islands near Useppa and Cabbage Key, and in Matlacha Pass. Look for fish pushing along the mangrove edges on the rising tide. For snook, fish the passes on the outgoing tide and the mangrove shorelines around Sanibel and Captiva. For trout, the deeper grass flats in Pine Island Sound. Sheepshead are around the Sanibel Causeway and the Matlacha bridge.

Tides & Conditions

Tides are moderating with the last quarter moon this weekend. Higher tides push the redfish up into the mangroves, so plan to fish the rising tide for reds. Water temperatures are in the low 80s. The wind is often light in October. Water clarity can vary with releases from the Caloosahatchee River, so check conditions before heading out.

Tackle & Tactics

For redfish, a live pinfish or a cut ladyfish under a cork near the mangroves, or a gold spoon and a paddle tail on the flats. For snook, a live pilchard or a soft plastic jerk bait. For trout, a popping cork with a live shrimp. Use 20- to 30-pound fluorocarbon for reds and snook around the mangroves, since the oysters and roots will cut lighter line.

Local Intel This Week

Public launches include the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp near the Sanibel Causeway, the Matlacha Community Park ramp, and the Pineland area marinas on Pine Island. Shore anglers have good access at the Sanibel Causeway, the Fort Myers Beach Pier, and the Bowman’s Beach area on Sanibel. Fish are concentrated on the flats and along the mangroves for reds and at the passes for snook. Check current FWC regulations and seasons before keeping fish, including redfish and snook rules for this region.

This Week’s Tip

When fishing for redfish on high tides, cast as far back into the mangroves as you can. The fish push deep into the roots on a flood tide, and a bait sitting at the edge may get ignored. A weedless soft plastic lets you get into the cover without hanging up.
