Pensacola fishing report for the week of October 1, 2026. October is one of the best months of the year on the Panhandle. The water is cooling, the bait is moving, and the fall migrations are starting. From the beaches to the bay, there is something to catch almost everywhere.
What’s Hitting
This week on the water, Spanish mackerel are blitzing bait along the beaches and around the pass. Bull redfish are spawning in Pensacola Pass and along the beaches, and they are feeding aggressively. The fall flounder run is starting, with fish moving toward the pass. King mackerel are nearshore, and there are cobia and jacks around the bait. Inside the bay, speckled trout and slot reds are on the grass flats and around the docks.
Where to Find Them
For Spanish mackerel, look for birds working bait along the beaches of Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, and fish around the pass. For bull reds, fish Pensacola Pass on the outgoing tide and the beaches near the pass. For flounder, the rocks and drop-offs near the pass, along with the docks and grass edges in the bay. For trout and slot reds, the grass flats in Santa Rosa Sound and Big Lagoon.
Tides & Conditions
Tides on the Panhandle are small, and this week’s last quarter moon makes them even softer. Water temperatures are in the upper 70s and dropping. October often brings the first cold fronts, which can push the fish into feeding sprees. Keep an eye on the tropics through mid-October.
Tackle & Tactics
For Spanish mackerel, a small spoon or a Gotcha plug retrieved fast, with a short wire leader or 40-pound fluorocarbon. For bull reds, a fish-finder rig with a chunk of cut bait or a live pinfish on a 7/0 circle hook. For flounder, a bull minnow or a finger mullet on a Carolina rig, or a bucktail jig bounced along the bottom. For trout, a popping cork with a live shrimp.
Local Intel This Week
Public launches include the Bob Sikes Bridge area ramp, the Navarre Beach Marine Park area ramps, and the Big Lagoon State Park ramp. Shore anglers have good access at the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier, the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, and the Fort Pickens jetty area. Fish are concentrated around the pass and along the beaches. Bull reds over the slot must be released; check current FWC and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, including flounder rules.
This Week’s Tip
When the bull reds are in the pass, they often feed on the edges of the main current. Instead of fishing the middle of the pass, fish the edges where the current slackens. You will lose fewer rigs and find more fish.
