Chesapeake Bay fishing report for the week of October 1, 2026. Fall on the Chesapeake is one of my favorite seasons. I fished this bay extensively during my years editing the Mid-Atlantic edition of The Fisherman, and October is when it really comes alive. The water cools, the bait moves, and the stripers, trout, and drum feed hard.
What’s Hitting
What’s hot this week: stripers are feeding on breaking bait, chasing menhaden and bay anchovies across the bay. Look for the birds. Speckled trout are moving into the shallows on the Eastern Shore and in the lower bay, and some nice fish are in the mix. Red drum, both slot fish and some big fish, are in the lower bay around the Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the shoals. Spot and croaker are still around but thinning out.
Where to Find Them
For stripers on breaking fish, look for birds in the middle bay near the Choptank, Poplar Island, and the mouth of the Potomac. For speckled trout, the shallow grass beds and marsh edges on the Eastern Shore near Tangier Sound, and the lower bay near the Virginia side. For red drum, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the shoals near Cape Charles.
Tides & Conditions
Tides are moderating with the last quarter moon this weekend. Water temperatures are in the upper 60s to low 70s and dropping. The wind is often a bigger factor than the tide in the bay. Fall winds can make the open bay rough, so check the forecast before heading out.
Tackle & Tactics
For stripers on breaking fish, a soft plastic swimbait on a jig head, a metal jig, or a topwater popper. For speckled trout, a soft plastic on a light jig head or a suspending twitchbait. For red drum, a fish-finder rig with a chunk of cut bait, or a large soft plastic jigged near structure. Medium spinning gear with 20-pound braid handles most of it.
Local Intel This Week
Public launches include the Sandy Point State Park ramp near the Bay Bridge, the Solomons Island area ramps, and the Kiptopeke State Park area near Cape Charles. Shore anglers have good access at the Sandy Point State Park, the Point Lookout State Park pier, and the Bay Bridge-Tunnel fishing pier. Fish are concentrated under the birds for stripers and in the shallows for trout. Striped bass rules differ between Maryland, Virginia, and the Potomac, so check current Maryland DNR, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and Potomac River Fisheries Commission regulations and seasons before keeping fish.
This Week’s Tip
Breaking fish on the Chesapeake can draw a crowd of boats. Approach upwind, shut down outside the school, and drift into casting range. Running through the school puts the fish down for everyone. The bigger stripers often sit underneath the breaking fish, so let your jig sink before you start your retrieve.
