Striped bass Chesapeake BayPhoto: fishing.digital

Updated: Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Next update: Thursday, November 5, 2026

This Chesapeake Bay fishing report is a seasonal outlook for the Bay’s bridges, shorelines and lower-Bay structure. Fall is the best striped bass season of the year, with fish feeding along bridge pilings and rocky points, while speckled trout and tautog become the targets in the lower Bay. The dominant condition variable is water temperature, which continues to drop and triggers more aggressive feeding.

What’s Hitting

Striped bass are the headline, feeding around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge pilings, the Bay Bridge-Tunnel and rocky points on a moving tide. Speckled trout are active in the lower Bay creeks and marsh edges, and tautog are on the bridge-tunnel structure and wrecks. Bluefish are thinning as the water cools, and red drum are still found on the Eastern Shore. Menhaden and bay anchovies are the key forage this week, and bait schools near the surface often reveal feeding stripers.

Where to Find Them

Fish the Bay Bridge pilings near Sandy Point State Park and the rocky points near Thomas Point for stripers. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel islands hold tautog and stripers, and the lower Bay creeks near Poquoson and Mobjack Bay hold trout. The Eastern Shore’s seaside inlets hold red drum, and the shorelines of Kent Island hold stripers at dusk. The Choptank River, the Patuxent River and the Potomac River also hold stripers along rocky points and shorelines in October.

Tides & Conditions

With the moon waning, tidal movement is easing, but moving water at the bridges and points remains the key window. The Bay’s currents are strongest around the Bay Bridge pilings, and slack tide is best for tautog. Fall fronts bring wind that can stir the Bay quickly, so check the marine forecast. Plan trips around the tide change at bridges and points, since current concentrates bait and gives stripers an ambush advantage.

Tackle & Tactics

Bucktails with soft plastic trailers, swim shads and topwater plugs for stripers, plus live eels where allowed. For tautog, green crabs or fiddler crabs on a heavy jig. For trout, a paddle-tail or live shrimp under a cork. Dress warmly, because November mornings on the water are cold. A soft-plastic swim shad on a 3/4 ounce jighead is a dependable choice when fish are holding close to bridge structure.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Sandy Point State Park, Matapeake, Solomons Island and the Eastern Shore launches. Fish concentrate at bridge pilings, rocky points and creek mouths. Check current state and federal regulations and seasons before keeping fish, since striped bass rules change by season and region. Another strong location is the Kent Narrows area, which gives shore anglers access to bridge structure and channel edges.

This Week’s Tip

Wear a life jacket in November. Cold water shortens the time you have to recover from a fall overboard.
