Palm Beach fishing report - Lake Worth Lagoon • Gulf Stream

August is the dog days in Palm Beach. The snook spawn winds down toward the September 1 reopener, daytime swordfish continues to produce excellent action offshore, bonefish show up on the Lake Worth Lagoon flats, and the first hints of the fall pompano push begin late in the month.

Snook — Spawn Ends, September Opens Approaching

Snook spawning activity continues through August, though it tails off toward month’s end. The fish remain stacked on the inlet jetties, bridges, and beach mouths.

Florida snook season reopens September 1. All August snook must still be released — please observe the closed season strictly.

Best snook action is still at night on the bridge shadow lines. Live mullet, threadfin, and white soft plastics pitched into the up-current shadow produce. Fly anglers continue to have outstanding sight-casting at the bridge lights.

Plan your snook target trips for the second week of September forward when harvest opens.

Tarpon — Patterns Set

Tarpon remain in Lake Worth Lagoon and around the inlet, though numbers thin somewhat compared to June and July peak. The fish that are around are typically resident or slow-traveling.

Best action is at first light and at night. Live mullet drifted on the outgoing tide produces. Beach tarpon at dawn cruising the sand is still possible but increasingly weather-dependent.

Offshore — Swordfish Continues, First Sailfish

Daytime swordfish fishing remains excellent in August. The fishery has matured into a year-round operation but August conditions (light winds, often very calm) make for ideal drifting conditions.

First fall sailfish reports trickle in by very late August, though the serious migration doesn’t start until October and peak isn’t until November-December.

Wahoo are scattered on the deeper weed lines. Mahi-mahi are mostly gone except for the occasional straggler.

Blackfin tuna continue to produce on the deep wrecks. Vertical jigging is the standard approach.

Inshore Flats — Bonefish Pop-Up

Lake Worth Lagoon and the IRL flats north of Palm Beach hold a small but real bonefish population. August is one of the better months to target them as water clarity is generally excellent and the fish are actively feeding on the flats.

Sight-casting with light fly tackle (8wt) or light spin gear with small shrimp imitations is the method. The fish are spookier and less concentrated than Florida Keys bones, but local guides who specialize in this fishery know the spots.

Permit also show up on the same flats occasionally — even more elusive than the bones.

Reef and Wreck — Mutton, Mangs, Goliath

Mutton snapper bite continues around the moon phases on the deeper reefs. The August new moon and full moon are both productive windows for trophy mutton fishing.

Mangrove snapper remain consistent on the inshore patches.

Goliath grouper remain catch-and-release but the August warm-water bite is excellent — the fish are very active at this temperature.

Pompano — First Pushes Late Month

The first fall pompano arrivals can show up on the Palm Beach beach surf in late August. They’re early outliers — the real pompano push is October through January — but a few fish on sand fleas at the first cool fronts is possible.

Most surf anglers focus on whiting, croaker, and the occasional pompano this time of year.

Conditions and Reality Check

Water temps in August peak at 84-86°F. Calm conditions are common, broken by afternoon thunderstorm patterns. Hurricane season is at peak intensity — watch the tropics carefully.

Best fishing windows are pre-dawn through 9 AM and after 6:30 PM. Midday is brutal heat and thunderstorms.

Where to Be This Month

Palm Beach Inlet bridges at night for snook (still release only). Lake Worth Lagoon flats for bonefish sight-casting. 1,500-2,000 feet offshore for daytime swords. The deep wrecks for blackfin tuna. And start scouting the surf in the last week for the first pompano arrivals.
