June is prime time on Cape Cod, and the first week is firing. The Canal is loaded with striped bass, bluefish are crashing bait along the beaches, and the fluke and squid have shown to round out the inshore picture. Here is the week’s outlook.

What’s Biting

Striped bass are the headline, with the Cape Cod Canal seeing strong runs of fish on the breaking tides and bigger cows pushing through. Bluefish have arrived in numbers and are blitzing bait along the beaches and in the bays. Fluke (summer flounder) fishing is building on the south side, and squid are still around the lights and piers. Black sea bass are open and stacking on the structure.

Where to Find Them

The Canal is the obvious draw — fish the breaking tides at the east and west ends and the deep bends. Striped bass are also along the outer beaches and in Buzzards Bay. Bluefish are blitzing in the bays and along the south-side beaches. Drift the south-side channels for fluke and target the sea bass on the rock piles and wrecks.

Tides & Conditions

The Canal bite revolves around the moving tide — fish the start of the breaking current, especially around first and last light. Water is warming into the upper 50s to low 60s. Mornings and evenings remain the most productive windows. Watch the wind for the outer beaches.

Tackle & Tactics

In the Canal, throw jigs, pencil poppers, and swimming plugs on the moving water, and bring a long-handled gaff or net for the big fish. Live eels work after dark. For bluefish, toss metal and topwater with wire or heavy leader. Fluke fall to bucktails tipped with Gulp on the drift, and sea bass eat clams and jigs on the structure.

This Week’s Tip

Canal timing is everything. Be on the rocks before the tide breaks, not after — the best bite often lasts only the first hour of moving water, and the fish that crush a plug on the start of the current go lockjawed once the flow peaks. Check the tide chart and plan your spot accordingly.
