What’s Hitting
This week, false albacore are blitzing along the south side of the Cape, from Falmouth to Chatham, and in Buzzards Bay. Striped bass are moving through the Cape Cod Canal on their fall migration, and the topwater bite at first light has been excellent. Bonito are still mixed in with the albies, and bluefish are around. On the Outer Cape, stripers are feeding in the surf, and the sharks that have been hanging off the beaches are still a consideration.
Where to Find Them
Albies are along the south side from Woods Hole and Falmouth to Chatham, and in Buzzards Bay around the Elizabeth Islands. Stripers are in the Canal, especially on the east tide at dawn, and along the beaches of the Outer Cape. Bluefish are in Buzzards Bay and along the south side.
Tides & Conditions
With the full moon on Saturday, the tides are strong, especially in the Canal. The east tide at first light has been producing the best striper action. Water temperatures are in the mid-60s and dropping, which is getting the fall migration moving.
Tackle & Tactics
For albies, cast small metal jigs, epoxy jigs, or flies into the breaking fish and retrieve fast. A light spinning rod with a fluorocarbon leader is ideal. For stripers in the Canal, cast pencil poppers or other topwater plugs at dawn, and jig heads with soft plastics as the sun gets up. On the Outer Cape, swimming plugs and bucktails work well.

The Cape Cod Canal has a public bike path that provides access along both sides of the Canal, with parking at the Scusset Beach State Reservation and the Herring Run. Public boat ramps are available in Falmouth, Barnstable, and Chatham. Fish are concentrating in the Canal and along the south side.
