Greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) are the tackle-busters of the reef world — powerful, relentless fighters that live on offshore structure and have a well-earned reputation for destroying inadequate gear. Pound-for-pound one of the strongest fish in saltwater, a large AJ on the end of your line is a full-body workout that tests your equipment and your endurance. Their nickname — reef donkeys — tells you everything you need to know.

Range & Habitat

Greater amberjack range from New England to Brazil, with peak abundance from the Carolinas through the Gulf of Mexico. They inhabit offshore reefs, wrecks, rock ledges, and buoys typically in 60–300 feet of water. They strongly associate with structure and are often found in groups — find one AJ and there are usually more. Smaller amberjack (banded rudderfish and lesser amberjack) are found in shallower water.

Best Tackle

Heavy conventional required: 6’6″–7′ heavy conventional rod (50–80 lb class), high-capacity lever-drag reel with 400+ yards of 65–80 lb braid, 80–100 lb fluorocarbon leader 4–6 feet. Do not underestimate amberjack. Light tackle will result in broken rods, stripped reels, and fish lost in structure.

Top Techniques

Live Bait Fishing: The most effective large-AJ technique. Drop a large live blue runner, hardtail, or cigar minnow to the bottom near structure on a knocker rig. Amberjack attack live bait aggressively.

Vertical Jigging: High-speed vertical jigging with large butterfly jigs (4–8 oz) is extremely effective for amberjack. The jig is worked quickly from the bottom upward — AJ will follow and strike on the upswing. This is arguably the most exciting way to target them.

Live Bait on the Surface: When AJ are spotted near the surface around a buoy or wreck, pitching a large live bait to them produces explosive surface strikes.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Live Blue Runner (Hardtail): The #1 amberjack bait. A lively blue runner dropped near structure is irresistible to large AJ.
  • Live Cigar Minnow: Excellent AJ bait and widely available.
  • Large Butterfly Jigs (4–8 oz): Shimano Butterfly, Hogy, or similar. High-speed vertical jigging produces ferocious strikes.
  • Slow-Pitch Jigs: Slower, fluttering presentation effective for AJ holding deeper in the structure.
  • Large Swimbaits (6–8″): Paddle tail swimbaits rigged heavy and dropped near structure produce excellent results.
  • Popper: When AJ are surface-feeding near buoys, large poppers produce explosive strikes and an extraordinary fight on heavy tackle.

Seasonal Patterns

Year-round: Amberjack are available year-round on offshore structure throughout their range. Closed season (Gulf): Greater amberjack in the Gulf have a closed season (approximately June 1–July 31) to protect spawning aggregations — verify current NOAA dates. Best fishing: Spring and fall when fish are most active and feeding aggressively.

Pro Tips

  • Max drag from the start: AJ will immediately run for the structure the moment they feel the hook. Set drag at 35–40% of line strength and apply maximum pressure instantly — there’s no negotiating with a large amberjack near structure.
  • High-speed jigging: When vertical jigging, work the jig as fast as you can reel. AJ key on fast-moving prey — a slow retrieve rarely produces the same results.
  • Sabiki for live bait: Catch your own blue runners on a sabiki rig over nearshore structure before heading offshore. Fresh, lively blue runners dramatically outperform anything purchased at a bait shop.
  • Ciguatera risk: In some areas, large amberjack can carry ciguatera toxin. Know your local fisheries — this is more of a concern in tropical reef areas than on the US mainland.

Regulations

Greater amberjack: Gulf minimum 34 inches, 1 fish per person. Atlantic minimum 28 inches, 1 per person. Gulf closed season approximately June 1–July 31. Verify current NOAA regulations.
