Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) are the smallest Atlantic tuna — rarely exceeding 45 lbs — but on light tackle they’re one of the most exciting offshore fish available. Found nearshore in South Florida, the Keys, and throughout the Gulf, blackfin are accessible targets that provide a genuine tuna experience without requiring a canyon run.
Range & Habitat
Blackfin tuna are found in the western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil, with heaviest concentrations in South Florida, the Keys, the Bahamas, and the Gulf of Mexico. They associate with offshore ledges, wrecks, seamounts, and the Gulf Stream edge. Stuart’s Pushbutton Hill, the Keys’ offshore humps, and the Gulf’s nearshore platforms hold blackfin year-round.
Best Tackle
Light to medium: 7″ medium-heavy spinning rod, 3000–4000 reel, 20–30 lb braid, 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leader 4–6 feet. Blackfin on 20 lb class spinning tackle is extremely exciting sport.
Top Techniques
Live Bait on Structure: Drift live pilchards, threadfins, or ballyhoo near offshore ledges and seamounts. Chunking: Drift cut pilchards and squid while presenting a whole pilchard or small squid on a circle hook in the slick. Trolling: Small cedar plugs, rigged ballyhoo, and feathers at 7–9 knots locate blackfin efficiently. Casting jigs: When fish are on the surface, small butterfly jigs and metal spoons on light tackle produce spectacular action.
Best Baits & Lures
- Live Pilchards: The top blackfin bait in South Florida. Free-line near structure.
- Small Squid (whole): Excellent blackfin bait in the chum slick.
- Cedar Plug: Classic trolling lure — small (4–5″) versions perfect for blackfin.
- Small Butterfly Jigs (1.5–3 oz): Light jigging produces great sport on these hard-fighting small tuna.
- Feathers: Trolled feathers in blue/white or green/yellow are reliable blackfin producers.
Seasonal Patterns
Year-round in South Florida and Keys: Best action at Pushbutton Hill (Stuart) and offshore humps (Islamorada). Fall–Spring: Peak season as water temperatures are optimal and bait is concentrated.
Pro Tips
- Accessible offshore fish: Blackfin are often caught within 15–30 miles of port — one of the most accessible tuna species.
- Go light for maximum sport: On 20 lb spinning tackle, even a 20 lb blackfin is a genuinely exciting fight.
- Excellent table fare: Blackfin are exceptional sashimi — bleed and ice immediately for best quality.
