Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) are the most aggressive schooling gamefish on the East Coast — savage, voracious predators that attack prey in a frenzied blitz and have been known to bite anglers handling them carelessly. They’re found from Maine to Florida, arrive in the surf in enormous schools, and provide some of the most exciting surface fishing available. On light tackle, bluefish are world-class sport.

Range & Habitat

Bluefish range throughout the Atlantic from Maine to Argentina. Highly migratory, they follow baitfish north in spring and south in fall. They’re found from the surf zone to 200 feet offshore — beaches, inlets, bays, around schools of bunker, and at the surface when blitzing. The fall run, when large blues push baitfish schools into the surf from Montauk to Cape Hatteras, is legendary.

Best Tackle

Medium spinning: 7–8″ medium to medium-heavy rod, 3000–5000 reel, 15–30 lb braid. Leader: Wire or heavy fluorocarbon (50+ lb) is essential — bluefish teeth will cut through lighter material effortlessly. Use 6–12″ of No. 5 single-strand wire or 50 lb fluorocarbon.

Top Techniques

Casting to Breaking Fish: The most exciting method. Cast metal lures, poppers, or large plugs into the blitz and retrieve fast. Keep moving — schools of bluefish move rapidly. Surf Fishing: Cast cut bunker, whole squid, or metal jigs from the beach into blue schools moving through. Trolling: Umbrella rigs and tube lures trolled at 5–7 knots locate and catch bluefish efficiently.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Metal Lures (Stingsilver, Hopkins, Kastmaster): Fast-retrieved metal is deadly for bluefish in a blitz.
  • Popper: Few fishing experiences beat a popper in a bluefish blitz. Use heavy-duty poppers with strong hooks.
  • Cut Bunker/Bunker Head: Surf fishing standard. A fresh bunker head on a fish-finder rig in the surf zone.
  • Tube Lure: Classic trolling lure for bluefish. Deadly on umbrella rigs.
  • Gotcha Plug: Diamond jig worked fast. Excellent casting lure for surface-feeding fish.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring (May–June): Blues arrive in the Mid-Atlantic following bunker schools. Summer: Widespread — present from NJ to Maine throughout summer. Fall (September–November): The legendary fall blitz as fish push south. Large schools of blues and stripers work together to trap bunker in the surf.

Pro Tips

  • Never put your fingers in a bluefish’s mouth: Their teeth are razor-sharp and they bite reflexively even when landed. Use pliers or a dehooker.
  • Heavy wire or fluoro: Mono and light fluorocarbon will be cut immediately. Always use wire or 50+ lb fluorocarbon leader.
  • Replace treble hooks: Bluefish destroy treble hooks quickly — carry replacements and change frequently.
  • Eat or release quickly: Bluefish are excellent table fare when eaten fresh but spoil rapidly. Ice immediately or release.

Regulations
