The Outer Banks are shifting into summer mode. The cobia run is tapering off, Spanish mackerel have arrived along the beaches, and the offshore fleet is putting tuna and mahi in the box at the Gulf Stream. Here is what to expect this week.

What’s Biting

Cobia are still around but the peak of the run is winding down — there are still sight-fishing shots on the calm days off the beach and around the inlets. Spanish mackerel and bluefish are blitzing the beaches and the piers. Offshore, yellowfin and blackfin tuna, mahi, and the first billfish are coming from the Gulf Stream. In the sound, puppy drum, speckled trout, and flounder are working the grass and the bridges.

Where to Find Them

Sight-fish cobia off the beach and around Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet on the calm days. Spanish and blues are along the surf and off the piers. The Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet and Hatteras is the offshore destination for tuna and mahi. In Pamlico Sound, the grass flats and the bridge pilings hold drum, trout, and flounder.

Tides & Conditions

Calm, clear days are essential for sight-fishing cobia — pick your window. Water is warming into the low 70s nearshore. The offshore run requires a settled forecast. Mornings are the most reliable for the beach and pier bite.

Tackle & Tactics

For cobia, keep a heavy spinning rod rigged with a bucktail or a live eel ready to pitch to sighted fish. Spanish fall to small spoons and Gotcha plugs retrieved fast. Offshore, troll ballyhoo and skirts along the temperature breaks for tuna and mahi. In the sound, soft plastics and popping corks take the drum and trout.

This Week’s Tip

Even with the cobia run tapering, keep a pitch rod ready every time you run nearshore. Late-run cobia often follow rays and turtles on the surface — scan ahead as you idle, and a single well-placed bucktail to a cruising fish can still make the day this time of year.
