Flounder Paralichthys flatfishFlounder — inshore flatfish

Ocean City is running its classic late-July double: flounder drifts in the back bays for the family crowd, and canyon runs for the boats chasing mahi, tuna, and the first white marlin flags of the season.

What’s Hitting

This week, flounder are the inshore staple — steady drifts in the Thorofare, the East Channel, and behind Assateague producing keepers among the shorts, with the better grade coming off the deeper channel edges. Offshore, the canyons are giving up mahi on the lobster balls, a mixed yellowfin bite in the Washington and Poor Man’s, and white marlin showing in fishable numbers. In the surf, kingfish (whiting) and spot are steady, with a few small sharks after dark for the sport-minded.

Where to Find Them

Flounder: the channel edges on moving water — the Route 50 bridge area holds fish but gets pounded; the quieter water behind Assateague fishes better on weekends. Offshore: the 30-fathom lumps for a mixed bag, canyons for the marlin and better tuna. Tautog pickers are finding action on the South Jetty rocks.

Tides & Conditions

Tides build toward the month-end full moon — stronger current improves the flounder drift speed early in the tide but muddies the bay by max flow. The inlet has been navigable and the canyon-run weather windows have been generous this week.

Tackle & Tactics

Flounder: a 3-inch Gulp on a bucktail or a live minnow-and-squid strip combo on a fluorocarbon rig, drifted with just enough weight to tick bottom. Canyon mahi: light spin gear and chunks around any floating structure. Surf kingfish: small hooks, bloodworm bits, and a two-hook bottom rig in the wash.

Local Intel This Week

The commercial harbor ramp in West Ocean City and the Gum Point Road ramp cover most trailer boats; the Oceanic Pier and the Route 50 bridge catwalks give shore anglers flounder and a shot at stray bluefish. Fish are concentrating on the channel edges in the bay and on the lobster gear offshore. Check current Maryland DNR regulations and seasons before keeping fish — flounder size limits matter with this many shorts around.

After dark, the Route 50 bridge lights become the best show in town — stripers (mind the seasonal rules), bluefish, and flounder all stack in the shadow lines on the moving tide, and a white bucktail swum along the edge remains the timeless local medicine.

This Week’s Tip

When your flounder drift slows at slack tide, don’t quit — downsize to a bare white bucktail and hop it in place. Slack-water flounder stop chasing but they’ll still rise off the bottom to hit something dancing in their face.
