Great Lakes fishing report for the week of October 22, 2026. Cooling water is bringing walleye to the reefs, perch into schools and steelhead into the tributaries.

What’s Hitting

Walleye are active off the western Lake Erie reefs and on the Lake Ontario shoals, yellow perch are schooled on the sand and mud, and steelhead and salmon are entering tributaries. Smallmouth bass are in deeper water, and musky are active on Lake St. Clair.

Looking ahead, steelhead runs build with fall rains, and walleye fishing stays strong into November.

Where to Find Them

Troll the reefs near Port Clinton and Sandusky for walleye, drift the sandy basins for perch, and fish the lower tributaries of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario for steelhead after rains.

Tides & Conditions

Lake conditions depend on wind more than tide. Calm mornings are best for open-water trips, and a west wind can stir the western basin. Check a current marine forecast and tributary flows.

Tackle & Tactics

Crawler harnesses and crankbaits when trolling for walleye, small jigs and minnows for perch, and egg sacs or flies for steelhead.

Wear a life jacket and keep an eye on the weather, since fall storms build quickly.

Local Intel This Week

Public access includes Port Clinton, Sandusky and Pulaski. Check current state and provincial regulations and seasons before keeping any fish.

This Week’s Tip

Watch the wind. Late-season Great Lakes weather can turn dangerous fast.
