Crappie (Pomoxis spp.) — black crappie and white crappie — are America’s most popular panfish among serious anglers. Light-biting, schooling fish that stack near structure in open water, crappie reward patient and precise anglers with excellent sport on ultralight tackle and some of the best freshwater table fare available.

Where to Find Crappie

Crappie are found throughout the eastern and central US in lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and slow rivers. They relate strongly to structure — submerged timber, brush piles, dock pilings, bridge supports, and submerged vegetation. In spring they’re shallow for the spawn; in summer they suspend in open water near structure at 8-20 feet; in winter they stack in the deepest available structure.

Best Tackle

Ultralight spinning: 5’6″-7″ ultralight to light rod, 1000-2000 reel, 4-8 lb monofilament or 6-10 lb braid with 6-8 lb fluorocarbon leader. Sensitive tip for detecting light bites. Spider rigging (multiple long rods) is popular on large reservoirs for slow-trolling presentations.

Top Techniques

Jig Fishing: The most versatile crappie technique. 1/32-1/4 oz jig heads with soft plastic grubs or bodies dropped to structure. Lower into brush piles and work with gentle shakes and pauses. Live Minnow Under Float: A small live minnow suspended 2-6 feet under a bobber is classic crappie fishing and extremely effective. Slow Trolling (Spider Rigging): Running 6-8 long rods over brush piles and structure at 0.5-1 mph locates schools efficiently on large reservoirs. Vertical Jigging: Drop a jig directly below the boat near structure identified on your depth finder.

Best Baits and Lures

  • Small Tube Jigs (1/16-1/8 oz): The most productive crappie lure. Chartreuse, white, and pink are top colors.
  • Soft Plastic Grubs: 1.5-2″ paddle tail or curly tail on a small jig head.
  • Small Spinners (Beetle Spin): Retrieve slowly near structure.
  • Live Minnows (1-2″): Still the most effective bait — fathead minnows are widely available.
  • Small Crankbaits: Baby Shad and similar small-profile crankbaits for trolling.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring (March-May): The spawn brings crappie into shallow water (2-8 feet) near brushy banks — the most accessible and productive fishing of the year. Summer: Fish suspend at 10-20 feet near structure. Night fishing under dock lights can be exceptional. Fall: Active feeding before winter. Shallow again near structure. Winter: Stack in the deepest brush piles and timber. Slow vertical jigging required.

Pro Tips

  • Mark brush piles with GPS — crappie return to the same structure year after year.
  • Use bright light at night — crappie are drawn to dock and boat lights. Night fishing in summer can be spectacular.
  • Present at the right depth — crappie school at specific depths. Find the depth and you find the fish.

Regulations

Crappie regulations vary by state — most have no size limit or 9-10″ minimums. Check your state DNR.
