Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) are one of the most prized inshore fish on the Southeast and Gulf coasts — fast, hard-fighting, and considered by many chefs to be the finest-tasting fish that swims in Florida waters. They’re also notoriously challenging to find consistently, demanding knowledge of tidal movements, seasonal patterns, and the specific feeding habits that make them the prestige target of serious surf and inshore anglers.

Where to Find Pompano

Pompano range from Massachusetts to Brazil but are most abundant from the Carolinas through the Gulf of Mexico. They’re migratory, making a spring run north and a fall run south. Found in the surf zone, passes, inlets, and on shallow flats and grass edges. They feed almost exclusively on sand fleas, small crabs, and shrimp in the surf wash and on the bottom of coastal flats.

Best Tackle

Light to Medium Spinning: 7″ medium-light spinning rod, 2500–3000 reel, 10–15 lb braid, 15–20 lb fluorocarbon leader. Pompano are not large fish (most 1–3 lbs, exceptional fish to 5+ lbs) but they fight disproportionately hard for their size.

Top Techniques

Surf Fishing with Sand Fleas: The classic. Fish a two-hook pompano rig with sand fleas on a fish-finder rig in the trough behind the first bar. The foam on the edge of the wash is where sand fleas tumble — position your rig in that zone. Jig Fishing: Pompano jigs (1/4–1/2 oz with a small teaser) bounced along the bottom in passes and on flats. The specific pompano jig retrieve — bounce-bounce-pause — triggers bites from fish that won’t touch bait.

Best Baits & Lures

  • Live Sand Fleas (Mole Crabs): The definitive pompano bait. Harvest from the surf wash at low tide or purchase from surf shops.
  • Fishbites (artificial sand flea): Excellent alternative — stays on the hook better than live sand fleas. Orange and natural colors.
  • Pompano Jigs (chartreuse/orange, chartreuse/pink): The top pompano artificial. 1/4–1/2 oz head with small teaser fly above. Fish on the Jensen Causeway relief bridge and on the Sailfish Flats.
  • Live Shrimp: Effective in passes and on the flats.
  • Fiddler Crabs: Excellent bait, especially in the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic.

Seasonal Patterns

Fall–Winter–Spring (October–April): Prime pompano season in Florida and the Southeast. Cold fronts push pompano close to shore and into the surf. Spring (April–June): Northern migration — excellent surf fishing from the Carolinas north. Summer: Fish move north; Gulf Coast has year-round action in the passes.

Pro Tips

  • Find the trough: Pompano feed in the trough between the beach and the first sandbar. Cast to this zone — not through the bar into calmer water behind it.
  • Fish after cold fronts: The 2–3 days following a cold front push pompano into the surf in numbers. This is the most reliable pompano trigger in Florida.
  • Teaser matters on jigs: A small fly or teaser 12–18″ above the main jig dramatically improves pompano jig catch rates.

Regulations

Florida pompano: 11″ fork length, 6 fish per person per day. Gulf states vary. Check current FWC or NOAA regulations.
