Walleye (Sander vitreus) are the premier freshwater fish of the northern US — excellent table fare and a satisfying challenge. Their marble eyes make them light-sensitive and most active at dawn, dusk, and night.

Where to Find Walleye

Clear to moderately turbid lakes and rivers with rocky or gravel bottom throughout the northern US and Canada. They suspend at the thermocline in summer and move to shallow rocky structure in spring and fall.

Best Tackle

Medium-light spinning (6’6″-7’6″, 2500-3000 reel, 8-12 lb braid, 10-15 lb fluoro leader). Sensitivity matters — walleye bites can be subtle.

Top Techniques

Jigging: 1/8-3/4 oz jig tipped with minnow, leech, or plastic. Gentle hops — most strikes on the fall. Lindy Rig: Walking sinker with live minnow or leech dragged slowly over structure. Trolling: Crankbaits and spinner harnesses on planer boards at 1.5-2.5 mph.

Best Baits and Lures

  • Live Leeches: The preferred bait of experienced walleye anglers.
  • Live Minnows: Fatheads and chubs on a jig or Lindy rig.
  • Nightcrawlers: Excellent on spinner harness in warm water.
  • Crankbaits (Rapala Shad Rap): For trolling and casting.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring post-ice-out and fall are peak feeding seasons. Summer fish move deep — target at night. Ice fishing is outstanding all winter.

Pro Tips

  • Fish low-light periods — dawn, dusk, and night outperform midday significantly.
  • Slow down — walleye are not aggressive chasers.
  • Use a sensitive rod to detect subtle bites.

Regulations

Vary by state. Minnesota statewide 15″ minimum, 6 fish limit. Check your state DNR.
