The First Coast is in full summer swing. Pogy pods are strung along the beaches with king mackerel underneath, redfish are crawling the creek banks on the flood, and the jetties are starting to give up better flounder — a hint of the fall run still months out.
What’s Hitting
This week, kings are the story. Fish in the 15- to 30-pound class are shadowing the menhaden pods within a mile or two of the beach from the jetties south past Jacksonville Beach. Slow-trolled live pogies are getting bit-through leaders — wire up. In the river and creeks, redfish are steady on the flood tide, and mangrove snapper have moved into the rocks at Mayport in surprising numbers. Flounder to 20 inches are picking up around the jetty tips.
Where to Find Them
Find the pogy pods and you’ve found the kings — birds and flippers give them away at dawn. Reds are working the flooded spartina edges in Sisters Creek, Clapboard Creek, and the Intracoastal south of the Palm Valley bridge. Flounder are on the current seams at the ends of both jetties and around the Little Jetties rocks.
Tides & Conditions
Tides strengthen through the week ahead of the month-end full moon — bigger floods put reds farther up in the grass, so time your creek runs for the last two hours of incoming. Nearshore seas have been friendly early with the usual afternoon storm risk.
Tackle & Tactics
Kings: stinger-rigged live pogies on light wire, slow-trolled at the edge of the pods. Reds: a gold spoon or a live mud minnow under a popping cork along the grass. Flounder: a finger mullet or 4-inch Gulp on a 1/2-ounce jighead, dragged slow across the seam.

Mayport Boat Ramp puts you two minutes from the jetties; Sisters Creek (Jim King Park) ramp is the move for the creek reds; Joe Carlucci ramp covers the mid-river. Fish are concentrating around bait — the river fish on the rocks, the beach fish under the pogies. Check current FWC regulations and seasons before keeping fish, particularly on flounder.
A bonus this week: tarpon are shadowing the same pogy pods as the kings, and a heavy rod with a cut pogy soaked behind the boat has jumped several fish for the beach fleet. Keep one rigged — the mid-summer beach tarpon window here is short but real.

When kings are skyrocketing but refusing the troll, kill the motor, drift the pod’s edge, and pitch a free-lined pogy with no weight. The natural fall gets the strike the spread can’t buy.
